    FAL renewal

So, my application to renew is in the system.
On the advice of the officer in Hamilton that phoned me to point out it had expired (no reminder sent ), I put my sister in uk as a second referee.
No problem as they just do a phone interview according to said officer. I don't have any family in NZ.

Just had a follow up call from Nelson police, saying that I cant use sis as a referee as they need to do face to face interview. I point out the lack of family in NZ, and that my ex is unlikely to speak very well of me if I put her name down.

I have now been told to put down the name of someone that knows me well, and is preferably local.
Seems they make they change the rules to suit

Makes perfect sense to me to want face to face interviews. A phone interview could be almost anyone.

    madjon_ and Pengy like this.
All those with dogs waiting no longer fear death. Those with many dogs waiting even welcome it in it's time.

I have put my landlord down, with his permission.
The police recently phoned me as his referee, so I KNOW that is the usual way around here, even if face to face makes more sense.
It just sucks that the police are not all singing from the same sheet

My understanding was that new applications were completely face to face, but renewals had discretion to use phone for referees

Regardless, you’re better to nominate a local of good repute rather than a relative who’s overseas IMHO

Twice when I have been a referee all I received was a phone call from the vetting officer.

I had my renewal early last year or late the year before, they did phone call to my second referee but face to face with the missus the same day they interviewed me and did security inspection.

Many year ago I applied for a renewal and put a friend who was president of the local pistol club. It was taking some time and I had a hunting trip planned so I went to the police staition to see what was the hold up. The arms office took one look at my referee and reissued my licence on the spot. When I told my friend what had happened she laughed and told me she rings him if she didn’t think they were sound and proper people. No phone call ok. My how things have changed.

Same I moved to Christchurch from Oz 2 years ago. All my firearms owning mates were on the coast.
I did surrender it back in the day so it was a renewal of sorts. he got a phone call.

    Little bit of topic but....
Passport expired while here in the uk they ask in the renewal process for another kiwi passport holder to act as a reference. Not a family member. Him ten years ago would have not been a problem but now shit there's no kiwis that I know of that live here.
Ended up using a mate of mine that works in the mines in Africa even gave them his African cell phone.
Sent it in on Friday night got the passport on Monday afternoon did not even ask for the fast turnaround.

Guess anyone can get a nz passport but FAL well guard those closely because your an elite group
It's all fun and games till Darthvader comes along
I respect your beliefs but don't impose them on me.

As an aside, I had my local copper/ FAO from nz ring me up in Aussie when I'd been there 18 months to ask me what I was doing with my license as it was due to expire. I'd forgotten about it.
He suggested that I surrender it as it would be a better thing than lust letting it lapse.
It made a difference when I redid it after moving it back.
