Flying Air NZ with a suppressor. Declaration required?

Can suppressors be taken undeclared in checked in baggage?
Have had a pretty good search for any information specific to suppressors but can only find firearm and ammunition related information.

I am flying home for Christmas and wanting to take my DPT suppressor that fits a gun I have in the North Island and one that I intend on using over the Christmas period at home - in the South Island.

    Cheers

Its not a firearm or ammo, therefore not dangerous good (ammo), or a weapon. Unless you start to try hitting people with it, you should be right.

Shove it in your checked luggage and shut up about it . If they want to know they will ask you - dont offer information unsolicited

Declare it, if it needs a police order form you should declare it. Their scanners are very good now. In fact, it's going to show up as a metal pipe on the scanners so they're going to open the bag up.

Although maybe it will look like a can or deodorant or shaving cream but the shit storm you may experience isn't worth the risk

Unless you are prepared to lose it, checking with AirNZ is the safe bet.
Pretending it is something that it is not is poor advice. So is hoping it will be identified as something else.

I lost 2 suppressors through NZPost through similar wishful thinking. Actually, I didn't think at all. I just posted them.

I'm with Tahr and Sneedfeed. Declare it and check it in your luggage. While technically you probably don't have to, airport staff are generally overcautious.

I once held up a flight carrying a barrel from WLG to CHC. Declared it, they said it was fine, but to check the bag in, and send it through the x-ray machine. Boarded and sat down. Departure time passed. After about 15 mins, ground crew came onboard and walked up to my seat... fuck... "Mr YNM, do you have a firearm checked onboard?". I very calmly and clearly explained it was a barrel, a firearm part, wasn't subject to inspection as part of CAA rules, but had declared it anyway, and showed him my license. He was very apologetic for the misunderstanding, thanked me for doing the right thing, and off we fucked.

Have a little think about current tensions, and don't be surprised if things get a little spicy - no good things will come of trying to sneak it through.

Declare it,youl get a polite conversation willing to help you.Dont declare it,your chances of keeping it start at 60% and declining.

    Cheers for the advice.

Called Air NZ: Does need to be declared and they will check it before boarding but no extra baggage or cost required.

Your logic on If it needs a mail order form is sound. While I wont be flying with any parts like this myself, I do have to wonder at what point does personal privacy yield to the interests of safety? The whole point of the scans and declarations is around safety or smuggling. Most items they ask you to declare fall into either of these groups. Aerosols, chemicals, DG, Knives / sharp things, knitting needles etc fall into safety because they could cause harm by use as a weapon or damage to airplane...Or drugs (or fruit / veges if international) and illicit contraband that are being taken places they shouldn't go .....And no matter what way I look at it, the suppressor does not fall into this group...the only group I can think it might fall into is the "because the govt wants to discourage legitimate ownership by inconvienence..."
