    Gun safety at Preschool

Hi all, my girlfriend works at a preschool and I was thinking since gun safety isn't being taught (and she thinks ill be a good teacher) I could go in and talk to the kids about firearm safety, ill need to think of a song and make it fun. The song so far is "What do you do if you see a gun? Stop, Don't Touch, call 111"(it's bad I know, but eh 20 seconds of brain power came up with it) THen the kids can go off and make a song out of it. I know some people here have done it before based on other comments on the forum but anyone have any ideas on how to make it fun, and interactive for the kids? It hasn't been confirmed yet, but if I do get the go-ahead, I just want to be ready. I was thinking about a bolt action and removing the bolt and leaving it at home for safety and no live rounds of course.

    Any ideas let me know

    Cheers

By telling them to call 111 if they see a gun implies guns are bad.
Not the message you want to send.

Somewhere....I recall seeing preschool teaching the safety bit with the "stick guns" the kids were using....can't recall where I saw it but it's been done

Use a toy gun for sure or you'll get complaints

DO NOT take a real gun to school, that has the potential to turn into one big clusterfuck in around .03 seconds
But I applaud you for what you want to achieve and I agree with 7mmwsm, the message should not infer that guns are bad, more that guns ain't toys, find an adult and tell them would be a more constructive approach imo......as for making it fun and interactive.....haven't a clue maybe look to resources from 'merica, they are probably all over this kind of stuff and you could probably take something and tailor it to NZ's perspective

Go here https://eddieeagle.nra.org/ and see how the US NRA does it.

    And here www.eddieeagle.com

"Stop, don't touch, tell Dad or Mum" might be a more appropriate line - cant think of anything that rhymes with "let a responsible adult know"

A few years back there was a Kindy who was allowing the kids to have toy guns, but they had to pass a little firearm licence to be allowed to have them and only to pretend shoot targets and pests. Yes I think kids being exposed to firearms from a young age is good but the call 111 as mentioned portrays them as being bad along the lines of stranger danger.

From time to time you see this sort of approach with kids being taught gun safety and issued with a licence to shoot toy guns at targets at kindy etc.

And that article was from Stuff, almost 15 years ago.
Wouldn't it be nice to hear that it had become mainstream teaching, much as with road safety, etc.
