I got asked to help with a problem mob of pigs. Farmer wanted them all gone. We got to the property and they could be seen from the roadside 200 yards away. 12 of them. We got out of car quietly and prepared and got to a position where we could load our rifles.
Because this was going to be a bomb up and because they were close to the bush, I decided Id fill the magazine and drop an extra into the chamber. something ive done countless times in the past when ive thought the extra round might be handy. However when I went to close the bolt, the claw extractor didn't wish to slip over the rim. We quietly retired too the truck for some tools but then couldn't remove the round from the chamber.
all the time the pigs were feeding closer and there was an air of frustration. I removed and checked the bolt and extractor spring. All looked good, so said to the guys that I was going to force it a bit harder, and with a decent hard push it worked, but I had a niggling feeling something wasn't right, the bolt tension just felt wrong and I was uncomfortable. So told the guys I was going to unload and keeping gun pointed ground wards, started to lift the handle.
With just the slightest movement of handle it went off, creating a divit about 2 feet from my toes.
Thought Id share because in the heat of a hunt like that with animals about and something going wrong, it's so easy to get distracted or impatient. Im bloody pleased I had my wits about me to recognise the situation wasn't fixed when bolt closed.
