    Illeagal firearms amnesty?

Well intentioned but I would suggest may be completely bonkers. What criminal is going to March down to their local cop shop and hand in their illegal firearms? None I would think.
Hang on, wait, no I think Mr Bush is picking up from our last ninny in the job to try and scare monger the public. Am I wrong?

I would have thought that they should go and catch the criminals and collect the guns why they are at it.

Licenced firearms dealers already have a permanent amnesty provision in the Arms Act (Sec 10 (2)). I have used this a lot over the years to make pistols, etc. legal. Of course only law-abiding owners will use this to make their firearms legal. Criminals don't obey laws, and they certainly won't want to get rid of any 'tools of trade'!

    You're not wrong.
Bush and Cahill are making an ongoing media attempt to keep the idea of illegal firearms in the public's mind, to bolster a coming effort to change the law in the wake of the current inquiry and further restrict the public ownership of firearms.

And if your a crim and a caught with a illegal firearm after the amnesty do you get a 50 yrs non parole or is that being to tough? OK 20 non parole would be OK, probably more of a kiss and a cuddle because of your upbringing?

i'm sure they will get more than a kiss and a cuddle if we put illegal firearms owners in with the sex crims, seems like a bloody good deterrent to me

Someone also mentioned in the article of a "Buy back" of illegal guns.....!!!!! Most are illegal cos they were stolen, I suspect, so a buy back of stolen guns is like asking them to steal to order..........At least they had sense to turn down that idea.

I always wondered how you can "buy back" something you never owned in the first place??
All those with dogs waiting no longer fear death. Those with many dogs waiting even welcome it in it's time.

They used to years ago! I bought quite a few firearms from Police auctions (ususally tacked onto NZ Antique Arms auctions but open to the public for police items) but they stopped doing it about 1970. Maybe they were embarrassed by the money they made!

I saw a picture of a sawn off they took off some clown a few years back. It was a mess. I wouldn't want to fire it.
Some of the "grandad's old war trophies " would have been good though.

Like the stories, true or false I don't know, of some cops in Oz "recycling" firearms thru the buyback process.

Police items I can remember buying; 6.5mm Jap Arisaka Carbine $40, M1 Garand $35, super tidy National Postal Meter M1 Carbine $50 (I got growled out by some old NZAAA member for pushing prices up on that one!), .30-06 M17 $40. These rifles were all in as issued condition. I wasn't interested in ordinary sporting rifles much so they mostly sold in the $20-30 range. Before I wax too lyrical about 'the good old days' I remember that I was only taking home about $55 per week in 1969/70 as senior firearms salesman for Tisdalls in Ch-Ch (not counting little perq jobs). I do remember that a jug of beer was less than 40 cents then though!

I'm stoked to here that. My $720 M 17 was worth 100 jugs in the 70's. Means I got an ok deal a couple of years ago

@gundocyes and you were a bloody decent gunsmith when i encountered you in the mid 80s. that was after i asked around and saw a job you did in building a kitset rifle for a mate of mine..the way you rectified my probs with my .303 and your taking the time to actually show me and explain what you were doing left me with a lasting impression of a true professional and bloody decent bloke!
I dont kiss arse=I tell it how i see it.good luck to you and your whanau.
