Looking for someone trustworthy in Wellington ( yes I know it’s difficult)

Looking for some trustworthy in Wellington with regard to disposing of firearms, a relative has contacted about me his brother in laws firearms he has dementia and they wish to sell them, his mental capacity degraded very quickly the wife doesnt know who to deal with in the stores, only 4 guns two quality ones a weirauch hw 60 j 22 lr, and a steyr Mannlicher model L 243, the others are an older remo bolt action 12g and an incomplete Brno military action in a custom full wood sporter mannlicher style stock missing mag and floor plate in the white also cal 308. Are there any Wellington Locals who can recommend a good place for her to offload these ? It’s to complicated to list them on the forum and she certainly doesn’t want randoms Turing up on her doorstep. I feel I’m just to far away to be of any real help selling them being located in Dunedin

Shit feel sorry for the poor old guy most on here are trustworthy and hope someone close can help you guys out

If you just want to quit them, ring Wayne at the Upper Hutt Gun Shop.

Bear in mind that taking these firearms and then selling them on his behalf would be an activating circumstance as far as having to register all your firearms.

Probs any easier to sell through a shop then

I could take them to the Upper Hutt gun shop for her but she wont get much for them.

If selling them all none to register?

@blip - even if you sell the 4 firearms, you will then have to register all your own firearms as well though... that's how the activating circumstance part of the register works. Some people may not want to be in the position of having to register everything they have so early on in the roll-out of the register.

I don’t know about the bloke himself I’m dealing with the brother in law and wife the bloke is not with reality most of the time if they think it’s the best way to deal with it I’ll PM to see if its possible for you to assist his wife, plenty of people have messaged me saying your a good guy.

@Surat - timing couldn't be worse with the introduction of the register. If the sale is to be expedited, the price they can expect will take a hit. The market is quite slow, so pricing will need to be sharp to move the firearms on quickly. It's not what they will want to hear, but I predict the register will mean a serious slump in sales for a while, until the dust settles.

I’ve advised them pretty much what to expect they can make the call

If they are taken to a gun shop for sale on behalf then as long as a FAL person goes with the lady then legally the lady "owns them" and would receive the cash from the sale. The sale would be from the current owner with FAL and to whoever the shop sells them to and the person with the FAL would not own them but be ensuring that they stay in the posession of a LFAO at all times. Once the shop has psossession they can sell on behalf or some offfer storage (cost?).

You used to be able to drop off firerms to a shop without a license in situations like this. The shop would NOT be allowed to give them back untless said person got a license, but cash from sale would be able to go to them.....

Ownership and possession are two different things and concepts which politicians seem ill prepared to understand which is ironic because it is exactly sophistry they use with shares (in akl airport for example) .

You could OWN a firearm but you cannot take possession without a license....and you can possess a firearm with a license and not own it...

It's an interesting question and one that was asked a while back but as far as I'm aware the question is still awaiting an answer about how it will work for an estate sale type situation. In this case the owner is still about, licensed but medically is in the position of not meeting the "fit and proper" test - another LFO carrying the items to a compliant disposal point doesn't technically take ownership as long as they are held for less than 30 days. If I don't own it - not my role to be the "seller" and the owner takes responsibility for the sale then basically surrenders their licence. In an estate situation, the estate is still the lawful owner and has the financial interest but the actual compliant possession will need to be sorted. This is the question that was asked, as what are the actual procedures for doing this and who can perform the service?

I don't think it's terribly complicated. Looks to me that if you are giving a firearm to a mate etc for less than 30 days you don't need to do change of ownership so the same thing applies here. You would just need the details of the actual owner for the change of ownership.

Another scenario I was thinking of was if you had someone from overseas with you who held a NZ firearms license, can you loan them a firearm for a hunt without it being transferred onto their license. Going to get complicated if this needs to be happening for maybe a day or 2, be a great paper trail.

I read that firearms can be loaned for 30 days, after that it has to be recorded in the register

Yes, you can. This is outlined on the info page. You can loan a firearm for up to 30 days with no issue.
