Just started the process of renewing my FAL, which expires in April 24. The local plod informed me best to get my application in 4 months before expiry date so that's all good i thought , got an old mate lined up for a reference and started filling in the mountain of info needed for my application, when got to one question where they ask if you have lived in any other country for more than 6 months in the previous 10 yrs and if so i will need to get a criminal record check, in my case i lived in Australia for 9 yrs until 2017.
Well what a head Fuck that has been, the info on the application form on who to contact (immigration NZ)was all wrong, but found out i needed to contact the Australian Federal Police and after a few days searching though old documents stored away ,managed to find all the documents they wanted to prove my identity ie.Australian drivers license, Birth certificate,Bank statements, utility bills etc to prove i had lived in Perth WA.
Finally got my online application for a criminal record check off yesterday, which was a head fuck in its self when you are a old coote not good with computers, so 'touch wood' it all goes well!!
Mmm thats a good point
Just about thought that would be me too but the license after I moved back so that's 10 years. Didn't get it until 2017 so as long as I start the process until the November I'd be sweer.
Silly thing having to answer that question for a renewal. You've been deemed OK after 5 years
Hi Mate, how long after your vetting interview did you get the confirmation. Mine was two weeks ago and I haven't heard anything yet. The vetting officer was confident leaving that everything was in order
You should be sweet mate. There can be a bit of waiting especially in Auckland. I did my renewal end of 2022 and it took 6 weeks from the interview to get confirmation. There was a bit of back and forth about updated security requirements in that time but even allowing for that it was at least a month.
Cheers buddy, he had mentioned something along the lines that I should receive an email in two weeks or so, I must have taken that a little bit too literally 😂
Same here, Waitemata Auckland region. Applied in July, booked in Mountain safety course a few weeks later. One week after completing the safety course received an email to select a date for inspection and interviews, Licence received about 4weeks later. Will have to jump over to the introductions section and say g’day.
Three months to the day I got my approval email regarding my application. Here's hoping I get the card prior to Xmas.
My buddy and I gave it a go a few times, but let’s just say, the goats didn’t have much to worry about with us around. We spent more time tracking our missed shots than anything else. But it was still a blast, and it makes you appreciate the skill it takes when you do see someone pull off a great shot.
I recently went through the Burnsville MN conceal carry process. It was surprisingly smooth, and now I feel a lot more prepared when I’m out in the field. I guess practice makes perfect, right?
Anyone born overseas with recent experiences getting a license? I submitted police checks for all the countries I've spent greater than 6 months in over the last decade, but that doesn't include my country of birth (USA). I left as a toddler so I doubt the FBI jave a file with my name!
Currently going through the process now. First time i did it 15-20 years or so ago it took a month start to finish.
Now it's -
Submitted application mid June this year
Firearms safety course early September
Referee interview last week
Interviews and safe check next week
Waipa district
I noticed on the myfirearms website my new firearms license number has already been added
Following up on my previous post, had the interviews start of this week and everything seemed to go well. Interviewer said I should receive an approval email within the next 4-5 days, then the current license wait times is about 2-3 weeks for the physical card to arrive as the is a delay/shortage on the cards.
Assuming these time frames are correct, it will have taken me approx. 6months to complete the application from June till (assuming) end of October.
Waipa region.
Got my renewal this morning - applied for it September ‘24!
My new license is 3 weeks away, apparently.
Applied mid November, old license expired mid December
Process has been pretty smooth really, especially as Christmas/ New Year was in there.
Mine is due in November, but I'm overseas in the middle of the year, so going to get on with it soon. Loosing a few months of licensed time is nothing compared to the stress of running out of time.
FWIW Applied for renewal 18th feb 2025,
Referees were interview Monday just been, 24th March.
My bit and security check next day, 25th
Email today saying licence approved and will receive license card in mail within 6-8 weeks ?
New expiry date is 10 years from my original expiry date in Mid May.
Over all pretty painless and straight forward.
both mine and my sons are due at christmas within 5 days of each other. thinking might start the process sooner rather than later . last time (9 years ago) before all the malarkie happened it took 5 months and i couldnt buy ammo for 3 months as license had expired
I applied mid february as my license expired on the 14th of april, referee and wife interveiwed on the same day, 1 week later was my face to face interveiw and security inspection, all good and an email confirmation arrived 2 days later, as everyone else has said pretty painless and straight forward
Has anyone flown domestically on an expired licence. Roar trip next week. Licence expired late Feb, applied early Jan. I have the email from the FSA saying everything fine in the meantime, but just nervous about whether there will be issues with Air NZ.
Had my renewal visit this morning. No drama, nice guy. However experienced a gun owner you are, I would recommend going through all the e-learning and doing the quizzes.

interviews and checks done, wifes FAL arrived in 3 weeks, mine took 2 6 or 7 weeks despite checks being done at the same time.
interviewers comment was " you take your home security to extremes dont you!"
Been doing those 3 quizzes ,once a week.Keeps you up to speed.Interview next month some time.
Ring them a lot. The first time I rang that told me that my first referee was a bout to be contacted and it turned out that was the case.
THings like speeding tickets - more than 20 k over and things like that may make a big difference in individual cases. The people at the end of the phone will likely lie if that is the case or in some cases not be able to see the information (esp as the people you speak to are likely, almost certainly not sworn police officers).
7 rules in order, its like poetry.Get my visit in 2 weeks.
Got my renewal approved today. Applied 06 March 2025, so about 7 weeks. It was a fairly straightforward process. Pleased to see that the new licence expires 10 years after my current one expires, so there is no harm in applying early.
Had my interview yesterday. The Waikato is currently running around 5 months from applying to get through the process.
Just been through process, put in paper work end of January, all interviews and security checks done by first week in April and they approved and said new card will be 6-8 weeks so around end of May.
More than happy with procedure and time to get it done.
