What facts do we think we know? He was drunk, threatened cops with a knife and spade, driving recklessly and failing to stop putting other road users at risk, rammed multiple Police cars. What do you think should've been done? And you've got a lot more time and information than the officers had to make the decision.

Id be keen to know exactly what the guy was doing when the shots were fired at his car.

Unless he was about to injure someone, and the shots were an attempt at preventing that from happening...

Somehow I doubt that is the case. And if it were the case, I am dam surprised another courier driver is not lying in the morgue.

@Mauser308 you assume the shot was aimed at the tire.... Probably aimed at the courier driver in the background.

It's not uncommon to be fired at by the "Presidential Bodyguards" if you don't pull over into the slow lane in South Africa. These dudes go full out, lights etc. and all just because they can. No real emergency at all.

Pretty sure I saw a youtube vid where a guy was shooting a windscreen with several types of pistol cals and they wouldnt penetrate the windscreen. The windscreen angle doesnt help much either.

BUT even they got it wrong more often than not and the collateral damage was astronomical......... we did as a project in high school did a round count on one episode....it was rather high....even Rambo used less.
as I said earlier.... nobody was hurt..the perp was stopped....job done good on the folk who stopped him...paperwork and doughnuts all around.

many many many moons ago in old greymouth town a brand new district commanders police falcoon(2 weeksold) was taken out on a job by a couple of junior plods on nighshift .the person of interest did some very interesting modifications to it with a L/A 30/30 rifle as two young coppers with rapidly loosen ing sphincters(anal that is) vacated said car post haste .
cuzzie who worked for coppers and was an ex spraypainter ended up towing it on car trailer over the hill.
the outcome -one very irate district commander and the aspiring sniper 6yrs in the large barbed wire club jakelvin compound at kirk rd templeton IIRC. damage -$7.5kapprox =write off
one slug went through radiator and and assorted engine bay components.another went through window and drivers seat in direct line with drivers adams apple another clipped edge of bonnet before travelling length of car to exit leaving a thumbsized hole next to number plate .T had a photo of his thumb in that hole!
some wag reckoned it should have been taken out and thrashed till the motor seized so ford(fix or repair daily)could live up to his name. DCs thought on this are unknown!
coasters dont do wrong fuel -thats so boring-although the sniper was in fact a imported drug addled dickhead!
