We are not going to win ANY lifting of magazine capacity restrictions as regards A/E cat categorisation. You can currently rapid fire 8 rounds in a semi auto rifle, quite fast fire 11 rounds in a Lee or a .22 semi-auto. The passive-aggressive frankly stupid type of legislation such as that free-standing grips, "flash hiders" and bayonet lugs is an easier target as they arguably have nothing to do with public safety, everything to do with gun hate... on a par with, say, a suggestion that all sporting guns must be PINK!

The whole MSSA thing was just a move "to be seen to be doing something" rather than fixing the actual issues that existed. Police already had the powers/legislation to fix the issues before the incidents, and were warned that they should use those powers before something happened. Police had to ask for measures like this to take away attention from themselves for their systematic failure to act in a timely manner. Full scrutiny was avoided. The Mahon Report into the Erebus Disaster was still relatively fresh and I don't think they wanted anything like that looking at them.Quote:

My take on the modenization thing; the arms act and later arms amendment bill were written when the bulk of gun owners were either farmers, or hunters, who would steriotypically have a swandri, a pikau and a sporterised .303. Times have certainly changed, with other things like precision rifle shooting, service rifle shooting and ipsc/3gun becoming mainstream sporting use for guns. Clearly police fear this change, and desire a strangle hold on firearm use outside of their opinion of "sporting" is. I feel that they have grown totally out of touch with the shooting community and sports. For example, "black rifle" owners are no longer a small niche group that can be pushed around by policy, for fear of rocking the boat.
When the time comes, submissions need to be in the thousands, unless you want a roll back to the pre 2009 situation or worse.
