    An investigation will be launched after an army soldier suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder in an accident during a live field firing training exercise at Tekapo Military Training Facility last night.

    The private, a member of the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment’s 2nd 1st Battalion based at Burnham Military Camp, was taking part in a night live-firing exercise when the incident took place, the New Zealand Defence Force said in a statement released this afternoon.

    He was treated by New Zealand Army medics at the scene, before being transported to Fairlie by a NZDF ambulance, from where he was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital.

    The injured soldier is in a stable condition and is scheduled to undergo surgery, the statement said.

    The soldier and his family are being supported by the New Zealand Army.

    The live-firing component of the exercise was suspended immediately following the incident.

    Strict rules govern live firing on ranges and careful contingency plans are in place, which were immediately carried out, the statement said.

    The New Zealand Army takes its health and safety responsibilities seriously and an investigation into the incident will be launched, it said.

    Unfortunately Id say us licensed users probably have more accidental shootings than the defense forces.

    There are a lot more FAL holders than soldiers though in NZ VC. That said we don't do the same sort of shooting that they would have been doing during a night live fire. I have seen the sky alight with tracer and machine guns with glowing barrels from sustained fire during some of the night live fire sessions I participated in as a soldier.     Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
    Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
    Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
    Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
    Rule 5: Check your firing zone
    Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
    Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

    Yep.
    Now if was a percentage of bullets that hit the target Id say it would be the other way.

    Being licensed or not has nothing to do with it. Licensed firearms owners use firearms vastly different to how soldiers use weapons.

    I know a soldier that used his foot to clear a stoppage (hard extraction?) on a C9 when the barrel was pointing at his head, it fired, he was lucky it was only blanks in it and learnt his lesson.

    Sucks, but it was a night time live firing exercise. Shit occasionally goes wrong. Fuck I almost once copped a solid burst from a C9 in the head when they put a total nutsack on top cover... In broad daylight.

    You can drill/practice as much as you like but you some times can't beast out stupid. And other times shit just gets wrong.

    Best wishes for recovery for that Private regardless.

    Spot on. How many licensed people actively shoot in close proximity to their mates with military spec weapons.

    They called it friendly "Fire" when I was in the military. I'm fucked if I'd call a soldier or a mate that shot at me a friend!Hope the soldier has a speedy recovery.
