Its a bit like training a dog ..gotta make it fun. When i started ny girls out shooting i got them to blow up some balloons and put them out . Lots of fun watching them pop. Also they made there own paper target we put put to see the pellets hit a target. You may find he gets more satisfaction at that age hitting something achievable instead of killing something or throwing clays out. My daughter used to when lead 410 was allowed be the follow up gun for finishing the woundies . Gave her a purpose and some connection to start out in the duckshooting sport.

And therein lies the numpty award of the decade for the powers that be banning 410 lead shot on ducks because all lead is bad even though there is such a small amount of lead shot at ducks by kids with it to me negligible. Lead ammo I'd bad enough, I don't know if non toxic ammo for.it is even available. Shouldn't have been banned unless it was. I have a pump 410 I got for the missus years ago. I do really like it but geez it hurts to feed it
Edit: just seen the load. Light but probably quick. Clothing, recoil pad, some lead in the butt and possibly a cheekpiece but from your OP it was all about the shoulder.
Do all that before you try it again and when you do only use a handful to see what happens. If they say that's heaps better try some more but don't over do it.
Worse case is trade it in for something a little heavier or maybe something like a 28 gauge.

    Listen to MD.

    Less powder, less recoil.
    Less shot, less recoil.
    Heavier gun, less recoil.
    Better fit, less recoil.

    KISS.

Me thinks forcing 1oz of shot down a 12 gauge barrel has got to have less recoil than
forcing same amount of shot down a smaller 20 gauge barrel, given similar velocities.

If it flies, floats or f#cks, your better off to rent it

And pull it in tight to your shoulder, roll with the punch

another wee idea of mine now if junior has a designated shooting vest or top grab one of those yoga mat /sleeping mats and cut a recoil pad out of it .
now get someone to sew that pad into a cover with tags on .
simple matter of pinning it to the shooting shoulder and they should be away laughing.ive done it on one of my vests altho iwent all fancy and sewed it in red leather-trust me this does work .
my only other comment is in regard to the gun used .Iprefer a beefy foreend it allows one to get a good grip and hold that through the recoil.Ive tried guns with splinter foreends et al and they leave me colder than a bloody honey mooners breakfast.one i tried booted worse than an old milking cow when freezin water hits her titties!
the owner insisted it was a clan heirloom and he must use it despite his technique of point eyes shut face grimacing and pullinthe triger like a schoolboy with a penthouse mag!
he couldnt hit a outhouse door at five paces!

That's it, thats the mistake people always make, kids don't do it, mostly because people forget to tell them to do that. Its hard to instruct someone when a lot of what we do is automatic

I had the same issue years ago with my lad and his first shotgun.
To be honest I would sell it as you will struggle to get him to use it just tell him it was a shit gun and move it on.
Sometimes you just need to fool them abit.
He will always think that gun will boot like an old mule. A 12 guage using trap loads might be better.

Find the lightest load you can get, there is more available for 12g in the light loads, such as winchester AA featherlite or the falcon cowboy rounds, that way you can work up slowly to a heavier load.
Not too sure whats comparable for 20g, but you might be able to get some custom loads made.

7/8 oz Target loads and a GAS operated semi auto shotgun are the best combination you will get for that situation.
What is the gun that Gun City sold you?

No one has asked? What type of shotgun? side by side, pump, semi? Hopefully not a single shot... i have a 12ga single shot, even with a long barrel its pretty light, kicks pretty hard. More mass tames them quite a bit.

I'm no expert, but got a mate who does a reasonable bit of shotgunning, would typically use a semi for younger/lighter folks, absorbs some of the recoil. Having the fit right (i.e. length) is also key, also trigger hand pulling the stock firmly into their shoulder.

Where did he bruise up? Cheek or shoulder? Shooting from standing position?
