    Mossberg 500 Firing Pin

So my old 1990s Mossie broke the end off the firing pin. No big drama replacing other than a new pin with shipping leaving about the price of a coffee out of $100. Not bad value I guess from the original.

But, a question for the metal experts out there, more from a "can it be done and be reliable" stand rather than standard utility. Is it feasible to weld a new tip on? I imagine if we were in the situation of not being able to source a replacement then fixing a broken one becomes the only way of making a gun operational again.

Mine broke when two older primers fell apart on successive shots and took the end off. My bad for not noticing the condition of the primers when I loaded them. I'm guessing that the first objection to a repair would be metal fatigue from age and use. But there is quite a length of pin that could be cut back before getting into the body shape that is keyed to the spring and housing. Im thinking that trimming and replacing that business end back to the "body" of the pin should be feasible. No?

Probably not economic but if anyone with the skills and gear is tempted I can provide one to make the attempt on

In the interests of scientific research of course...

@rupert yes, soon as I pull the old one I'll put a photo of new and old up side by side. Cheers

Well I found the 15min, and learned the truth about assumptions- pulled the old girl down and apart from being kinda dirty, not having ever been stripped down in three and a half decades (but not having done a lot of work either until recently) it turns out there was exactly no measurable difference between the old firing pin and the identical new one. Despite all the assurances of my cowboy range buddies that "you done broke that there dang thing'". I'm guessing that a fragment of disintegrated primer jammed the pin up or blocked it somehow. I could not see anything else untoward. Cleaned and lightly oiled and reassembled she's as slick as grease through a goose but Im reluctant to try a live primer in the garage so range test tomorrow.

For the interested, here is a picture of the new firing pin. I reinstalled the old one, eternal optimist that I am, and now I have a spare in the drawer. As above, if there was a end missing it seems that it would be no big deal to weld a new tip on to the body about where it flattens, and then harden it appropriately. But sorry, nothing now to try it out with.

Cut a round remove all the guts shot wad powder and push the muzzle into a rag folded over
A few times on the ground and it will hardly make a noise
