Thread: red dot on shotgun

Hi Guys ,

anyone run a red dot sight on a shotgun for hunting , I am thinking about trying it out , mainly for rabbits & other stuff on the farm .

Heap of guys using buckshot on venison do. I tried and hated it. We did rabbits from the machine as well and after the first bucket of shells I took the thing off.
Sometimes you have to be further in front of the target than the field of view allows.
Might go alright when pottering around on foot tho.

I trialed my armson OEG on the Mossberg pump action for a few years on duck and rabbits.
I was just that sort of guy that had to you know....
I did some good shooting with it but ultimately if you are good enough with a shotgun you don't need one.
I have a left master eye and the Armson isn't a look through sight so it worked for me well and probably helped with my master eye issue. I reckon it also helped with poor stock mounting as when spotlighting rabbits rugged up on the back of a ute etc.
I would be more inclined now for a shotgun to have one to sight it in for slugs for deer.
BUT now I finally have it on my 357 rossi which I have been meaning to do when I bought them both separately over 25 years ago, there is a little demon in me that says I should fit it back on the pump action lol.
Don't have the money for a new one so that wont be happening haha.
Good little sight that doesn't need batteries either.

I’ve used one shooting deer, I found it better than open sights on the shotty as it helped me get on target real quick, also multiple shots were easier to get on to target faster, wouldn’t use a shotty with out one now

Heres my opinion from shooting a dot in open for the past 12 months.

If you need to AIM it like a rifle, the dot is a massive advantage. Example, shooting slugs, shooting plates at 30 yards covered by a no shoot, basically anywhere you will have to stop the gun on target. Key word here is "aim"

If youve done alot of shotgunning in your lifetime like trap or game birds (moving targets) with a more traditional set up then putting a dot on it may be a bit of a mind fuck. Everyones brain is wired differently, i struggled with the dot on a shotgun, you may like it. I found putting it as close to the muzzle as i could get it was alot better than having it right in front of my eye. Of course you can always just turn it off and go back to a more instinctive style of shooting and turn it on again when you need some precision.

I shoot one on a shotgun all the time.
I dont like shooting a single red dot (2, 3, 6 MOA) but I do like the 65 MOA circle dots that the Holosun sights have.
I find with a single small dot I shoot slower as I tend to shoot it more like a rifle.
The 65 MOA circle matches the shot pattern out to 20 - 25 meters so its child's play to nail what you aim at. The central dot is good for shooting slugs accurately out to 100m.

I prefer a single dot on my rifles.

Iv never shot animals with it, but iv shot heaps of clays with a shotgun and an Aimpoint Micro S1 Red Dot Sight. I like it. People who have shot their whole life with open sights may find it a little hard to get used to- but if you have any experience with low powered optics / red dots on rifles then it will be a much easier transition.

And see that's the almost the opposite of my experience. I only shot rabbits, geese and ducks (and a couple of clay target rounds to have a practice). Got a beautiful triple with a hard crossing shot at a 4th (missed that one) on ducks with the pumpy and the red dot all on video. I was shooting the next duck as the one before was hitting the water.
But then again as posted I have a left master eye so it did probably help that a lot and I wasn't ever too bad with a shotgun either.

Silly question, but are you shooting with both eyes open?

Not silly at all mate...I try both.....rifle I’m left handed,left eye strong and keep both eyes open when shooting,.....my shots ar3 just fine....with the shotgun,over/under......wild game birds etc....I find I shoot with better with both eyes open,....on skeet,one eye as I’m looking for a spot the skeet is moving too,keeping the skeet in my peripheral vision.........weird how that shit works,.......you need to practice both ways to see how it works for you...

If you are left eye dominant and shoot from right shoulder, just make sure you can't see the dot/circle with your left eye - even a fraction of it - or it gets really confusing.

I have no problem using a dot on a shotgun. Like Simon, my sons shotgun has a holosun with 65moa ring on it. I find that perfect for shotgun.
