    shotgun blueing

Hi i have a gun mark sabel sbs made i believe in the 70's that i would like to get reblued, i have been told that if the barrels are lead soldered it can't be done ,if however they are silver soldered they can be, so the question is is there anybody out there that can tell which system was used, thanks 00 Buckshot.

take the forend off and using a sharp scribe run down the seam between the barrels and rib, someware you cant see.
if it is silver its lead, if its gold your sweet.
it can be rust blued if its lead soldered, but you wont want to pay the price

The cost in mainly in the prep for the slow rust bluing.

And that depends on the condition of the metal and the existing bluing

Don't know if this helps but I got @Doubleshot to do my 1970's Laurona Eibar U/O shotty in Ceracote as part of its refurbishment - and I got a colour that looks pretty damn close to bluing - I think Midnight blue. But I"m sure that can be confirmed by Craig.

As ONYVA says I do rust bluing and all steel is taken back to clean steel i.e no bluing left in any way prior to the new coating being applied.

Hi Buckshot, the barrels will be joined using lead, the heat required to join the barrels with silversolder will warp shotgun barrels.

Shotguns can be blued, but not in the same manner as we normally use to blue rifles. If cost is an issue, have it ceracoated - it will look and function great.

If you would really like to have the gun blued, go ahead and do some research, there are some really great gun smiths in NZ that would be able to help. Experience in regards to shotgun blueing and maintenance is essentiale.

lightly heat up the joint with a hair dryer....apply cold blue compound. it it rubs off then its silver soldered. shotguns can be blued like rifles in the same tanks but depending on the soldering method the rib or sight may come off.

As said above, slow rust bluing is really the only method I would consider. You can do this yourself if you're meticulous about the prep.
And as I said above I do rust bluing and have done for some years
