We flew our new pointer pup Tauranga to Nelson 13 months ago on AirNZ via PetTravel, Cost was $280 from memory (small cat carrier and she was about 7kgs at the time).
Very easy
I have a pup going down south island, be gizzy, auckland queenstown and the new owner just rang me to say its going to cost $435 with him supplying cage. I was a bit shocked
Yeah sounds about the norm, I won’t send any south unless we have a couple going at the same time, I thinks it’s the same price to fly up and pick up as carry on
Have seen a few people here posting on Facebook if someone is already flying if they can take for them
Hi Big bear, I got a pup from Wellington to Invercargill just before lockdown last year & it cost $295 with me supplying the transport crate. It pays to shop around as there was several hundred dollars of variation in the quotes I got from the various transporters.
I used Donquest they are Chch based & found them easy to deal with.
Welcome to Donquest Boarding Motel for Cats and Dogs
We are getting our new boy sent down at the end of the month and $395 is the cheapest we can find so far. That's from Rotorua thru akl to nelson with a cage kindly supplied by the pup's current owner.
Anyone would think these animals have a seat on the plane with what they are wanting to charge
We have heard so many bad stories about 'JetPets' from the show dog community!
(personally use 'Globalpets').
Was a cost cutting exercise from air nz, so now you pay extra for someone to book the ticket and the normal freight charge on top.
Adds a considerable extra to buying a pup or dog between islands, try the pet bus or something similar.
Or like you said send two pups at once. I can now see why there a few people running a pet bus companies now
with out sounding like a dick, the cost to fly a dog is really not that bag and pretty similar to what we get charged to send parts around NZ same day on AIRNZ.
Given the cost of owing a dog over its lifetime its not really that much of a cost over the time of ownership.
Its just it seems a lot at the time.
I think its worth it to have the pup delivered speedily and with a minimum of disrrutpion to its normal routine.
I do agree flying a young pup from north to south can be quick, getting a pup in pet bus could be a full day, plus a ferry crossing.
Its been a very long time since flying a pup and like every thing the price has gone up.
We looked into the pet bus but that was a two day trip for the animal and actually costs more than a four hour tour of nz on the plane . And as said would rather the trip be as fast as possible for less stress on the pup.
We personally are very excited to be getting a new family member and are counting down the days as it is so the thought of having to wait even longer for the pet bus to arrive , and then we would still have to drive an hour and a half to meet the bus , and the same again on the return home , just isn't tenable to us.
Even if it was cheaper it still wouldn't be an option in our minds simply for the good of the animal.
Good luck with your new pup FTX, very exciting times ahead :)
interesting I will be getting a pup from the south soon I hope. I priced a pup from oz, was 3k +gst! thats just the flight not buying the dog.
This young guy will cart just about anything...will be crossing strait both ways several times a year, next trip around 20th January, going to Christchurch, I think...really good with animals...probably up front in cab with him...usually tries for night crossings.

Try this lady. I have inquired about getting a pup from ChCh to PN $180 look it up on FB.
The new owner off that pup has booked a flight, he was unaware of the price increases. That said i think it was about three and half hours and his pup was at its new home.
Since then i have had a price for another person from Gisborne to Blenheim from "on route horse stud transport" and i thought it was very reasonable priced less around $150 dollors
Pets can travel as extra baggage on Air NZ. Quite cheap if you or someone you know is flying in the same direction. You can hire a crate from air NZ. Might be worth your while flying down there and back with the dog. Or just paying for it as freight. Worth looking into.
