Hey guys,
I picked up my boy Van about 2 years ago, I have just recently started hunting and interested if anyone thinks/knows if Choc labs will go any good when it comes to sniffing out a deer.. And is it something you need to do from a pup.. or just get out there and give him a go? Hes had the choc and knows who boss and does as he's told most the time..

Anythings possible. I reckon you could train to sniff deer. Maybe next deer you shot get the ears or a bit of skin hide around the place and get him to sniff it out?
I'm not experienced but from what I've read on here most of the guys who are on here, I think, will say it's definitely worth trying.
If you can teach it to heel properly and it's not gunshy then at the very least it can be a mate to take out there with you, but you could probably set your sights a bit higher than that. Be patient and give it a go; there's a lot of guys on here that I'm sure would help you along the way.
Give it a go! I've got a two year old choc lab bitch, I got her as a re-home and have no knowledge as to her lines. As others said start off with basic commands and getting them used to the gun. I started mine on rabbits that i stalked with the .22 and use that as a basis for basic control, did this for about six months and have now only just started her on deer. She has only done about 4 stalking trips so far and as a result has indicated numerous deer and i've shot 2 deer and 2 pigs over her and all on public land! Just take it slow and don't rush it. Its great fun!!! Good luck!

No training tips really as i'm trying to figuring it out as i go. The indicator dog series in the NZ Hunter mag have been useful though.
