after life for a dog

I had to take one of my working dogs in to the vets yesterday to get stitched up after she ripped her leg open.
I had been holding off on putting down my old foxie coming up 16yrs. The cold was getting to her and had a big tumor as well. So her time was up.

So i am after some ideas, my wife doesn't want to bury her where we live on the farm. Not our farm. I don't really want to get her cremated. Wife suggested making a planter box and putting her in there so we can take it with us.
Any other ideas?

why not cremation? you can get the ashes in a small box and take it anywhere you go.
anyway thats just my 2c worth. i thought i was going to have to put my dogo x down lst year but with a pill a month and the oil supplement with his breakfast everyday he went from me having to lift him off his bed to being able to jump onto the back seat of a ute

Yep the dog went camping every year to the same place so have suggested this.

Because i am a bit of a tight arse but still might be on the cards.
Yep she had a good life started to going deaf and we noticed she was loosing her balance in the last couple weeks

This is the plan for all of ours they will go on the mantlepiece to wait for me or me wait on the mantlepiece for them heaven forbid things dont work out.

Cost is only minor, there are 3 dogs buried already on our small section and we don't feel like moving leaving our departed mates behind like in the past.

bury them in special place you will revisit in future...or cremation is the $$$ are there.

Spoke with a guy in Balclutha who did taxidermy, he was sick and tired of doing pets though and refused such work. Problem is when you do an animal someone knew personally they find it does not look like their pet. The appearance and expression is different, the eyes are different, you will just know your actual four legged friend is gone.

Curling your furry friend around the roots of a little tree in a big planter pot will work fine. If you go for a southern Rata it grows very slowly and the planter will not become unwieldy -- even if you end up staying where you are for 5-10 years.

Can't think of anything worse than looking at your skinned out pet every day.

Two of mine I had cremated, since I wasn't going to stay at the same place. My last 2 are buried since I've decided I'm not moving from where I am now.

I love my dogs, I think you already know that. Each to their own, and really I mean that, not being a dick about it, but once they’re dead they’re gone. Wouldn’t even think twice about some kind of physical remembrance, my memories and photos are good enough.

Bury your dog in a favourite place and then move on by getting another. You have a lot to offer a dog, even a different breed otherwise younwill allways be comparing.

Looks like she has life sorted. Took her mother up to the hut couple weeks ago must have got cold on her mat during the night jump up on one of the bunks and slowly made her way on the end of my sleeping bag.

Did you read my first post she was put down humanely by a vet last week so there was no stress. Is that ok.

Sorry to hear about your dog, I think cremation is the best bet mate, gives you options, hang onto the ashes, or spread them somewhere that meant something to you and the dog. A "gone but not forgotten" framed photo or something if you felt the need to have something physical to hold onto. Our staffy will be 18 this year, he bounds round like a pup still but I know hes starting to push the life expectancy boundaries for a staffy so thats what we will probably end up doing when his time comes.
We have a framed eartag to remind us of a cow that was pretty special to us... too big to go in the cremation oven! but when she passed she got a 7 hour ride home to parents farm and her own tree to rest under.

Yeap, got him a month before my 18th birthday, im 36 this December... hes getting pretty grey but he still tears around like an idiot, still drives me mad doing asshole dog things, still runs to mum for love and affection/protection when hes been an asshole. They are the most loyal of companions why wouldn’t ya get your ashes scattered together in a special place

My six year old dog Tui was run over and killed in front of me on June 24th. I cried at least once every day for the first week. Every day I have walked out and stood by her grave in the garden. Hard to take when they are good mates

I almost had something similar when the old boy in my avatar was a few months old. I went around to a friends house and let him out of the footpath side of the car, and he ran around the car out onto the road. Saw the car coming and managed to run out into the middle and stop him just in time. The dozy driver didn't even seem to see him from about 50m away ( at 50km/h) and only slowed down when I ran toward her car.

They live short enough as it is without them being taken early.
I still can't watch dog shows on TV since I lost my old boy a couple of months ago.

Ran my Jack Russel over one day, you couldn't talk to me I was so upset. After a week the daughter said Dad lets go fishing. As we were fishing she said time for another dog dad, so we got another breed this one is low shedding. Tilly is my avatar and she has taken the place in my heart that was occupied by Poppy. My dogs are with me pretty much 24/7, dont know what I will do when Jazz goes, shes an unbelievable dog going 10.5 yrs.

Had to put my loyal lab cross Ruger down 2 days ago. After a very short and aggressive battle with lymphoma.
We've decided to cremate him and put some ashes into a solid bronze mould of his paws to put on the wall. Not cheap but I couldn't put a price on the love he gave me over the years.

Sorry to here about your dog but loved what you done with the ashes

Always buried mine where we were living when they departed. That was their home that they knew, feel that's where they were happy. An odd one is in the bush if that was where their life ended.

Sorry to hear of your loss Trig. He looks like the type of dog who would be very tuned into your mood and needs.

I managed to put a paw print of my old boy and girl into the concrete of my carport I built, while they were both still with me. Just an impulsive move at the time but glad I did now

All of mine are buried in the dunes at Otamarakau. It's a special place for both myself and the dogs. It's the first place I ever saw a pointing dog in action. It's also the training ground that every dog of mine is started on. No matter where life takes me, I can return to that spot and remember them. Last year I imported a bitch from Denmark, pregant to a Norwegian sire. A pup was born stillborn in her litter. I buried her with my dogs, just closer to the shore. That way she could travel home to her tipuna if she chose to.
