    Bloody grass part 2

Felt a small hard lump on Enzo the setters shoulder this arvo, some quick work with the razor produced this:

A kernel of some description, maybe 4mm long. Slightly infected, I suspect it was making it way to the surface anyway, I just helped it out. Incidentally, Enzos grandfather Tanner has just had 4 ribs removed due to grass seeds...

    Keep an eye out people!

It can work into the rib bones ? or caused some sort of infection and they had to be removed as result?

I believe in poor Tanners case a large growth was mistaken for cancer, upon removal and dissection it was discovered to be a bunch of seeds, which don't show up on an x-ray. Lost his ribs for nothing

$1700 and two minor surgeries later, the Vet finally found a grass-seed under the ear of one of my spaniels. They used ultrasound in the end to identify it and inserted a needle next to it to give them a reference point before they started digging. It hard worked 1.5 inches inwards from the entry point.

    Fuck it, its only money

Was your vet confident ultrasound would show any grass seeds?
When I had this issue the vet suggested I take the dog to ultrasound but was doubting it would work, a knife through the skin was a better option at the time.

Yeah, she had used it the previous week to confirm one on another dog, so was confident it work on my dog also. Its just unfortunate that when I went in the first time (two weeks previously), they hadn't yet got the ultrasound so started with a scalpel but didn't go far enough.

just yesterday had the metal staples removed after the vet had to explore a hole caused by a grass seed none found inside but it is a reoccoring problem with my spaniel

Iv got good at removing them but Iv found the best thing is to cut all her hair off

Tell me guys what's this grass seed all about, I have never had an issue, and by the sounds of it I don't want to find out either

Is it more of a problem with longer coats , south island and southern north with different grass species, barley grass etc

Mainly it's barley grass but I sure any grass seed can do it . Particularly bad in breads that have long fur and breads that scent the ground . So if you where to jump to conclusions a springer or cocker would be the most at risk . But any dog can get them ,toes ,armpits ,nose and ears .

Barley grass. And coat length has fuck all to do with it, a long coat in fact would make it a way more obvious so you'd tend to look after them more I spose
