Greetings

Just wondering if anyone has had anything to do with freezing/banking dog semen? Am trying to track down a outfit in the Lower North Island, however thus far am only finding one in Auckland, Christchurch and Matamata.

Further more if anyone has had anything to do with it any rough costs for the whole process including the later breeding?

Only matamata I know of up North mate.
$700-800 for initial 'job' and freezing then $60 per year? I think...
Up around $1000 to do job I am told but I doubt that this price would be right. Seems very high.

glenbred in matamata is who we have used, mixed results to be fare, semen collected and frozen by them seems to be ok results.
we had a bitch A.I d a few months ago, cost was 700 from them......they have increased there costs a bit.

was about 800 collection and 80 a year for storage I think, the Auckland vets are a bit more from memory.
semen quality seems to be the measure of success, so the younger the dog the better the results when you do use it.
we have used glenbred a fair bit over the years, last time was successful as we are expecting pups in a few weeks, the time before that at 4k by the time the semen got here for no pups.........for the number of times we have tried I think we are at a 40% hit rate using TCI.
the litters I have had have been very small on average........they rate 1 pup as a successful litter.

the Auckland vets use surgical and I know of a few breeders I dock pups for that have a 100% hit rate with them, insemination cost 1k mind.
but always full litters.

There is also one in Blenheim.

I have had GSP semen stored at Veterinary Services in Auckland for nearly 25 years at about $130 p/a.
Sounds like i might have to move it to a cheaper option if the others are considerably less.

I can do some checking. I use to inseminate goats and sheep and I am a certified Artificial Breeding inseminator . collecting sperm and freezing it is always a problem . The thawing process can kill sperm very quickly. you need to thaw sperm at 35 degree for 5 seconds and inseminate .

How does it work for cattle? Same process .. The reason I ask is they are doing a shit load of AI and you think they would have it down to a very fine art.

Inseminating cows uses totally different gear and the hand goes in to grab cervix while you guide inseminator through. Goats and sheep inseminating gear is the same gear used in hospitals, but I couldn't get a job .I have asked a few girls but for some reason they decline LOL

We have used both Glen Bred and Takanini Vets, my preference would be Takanini vets, for colleting and freezing, they use a different method ( Camelot Farms) to Glen bred, Stuart Badger in the Hawkes bay also freezes semen using Camelot farms method. Camelot farms freeze semen in viles rather than straws, Glen bred use straws.
We have done a number of both TCI and surgical implants, 3 TCI's at glen bred for 3 litters of pups, one litter was only one pup but the others were 6 pups and my latest at 8 weeks old now was 9 pups, interestingly when we inseminated the bitch for this latest litter Glen bred made the comment the semen wasn't that great yet we had used this same collection 3 times before all resulted in decent sized litters. The only reason I used Glen bred for this litter is I just didn't have time to get up to Auckland to Takanini vets to do the AI. the only times we have missed getting litters (twice) was surgical implants BUT the semen was complete crap so no fault of the implanting method or who did the insemination. We ship lots of semen over seas ( last lot was 23 mating's from 5 different dogs) so it has to be done correctly, But if I was you I would get hold of Stuart Badger down that way.
