I've been informed by the ranger that my prick of a whippet has been caught again. That makes it 6 times in the last 3 days he's escaped my 5ft fence. I'm ready and willing to get rid of him but the missus refuses to let me. Funny thing is her wallet never opens when its time to pay for the fucking pound fees. He's already cost me the price of a good pedigree hunting dog (I'm estimating around $1500 so far in all the bullshit he's done).

cant figure out why either, he has no nuts anymore so it cant be looking for ladies, he gets exercised, has all the food he wants, has bones and toys to play with, gets out whether we are there or away and thinks its the funniest joke when I pick him up red faced from someones place.
I'd honestly make a conservative estimate in saying I reckon it'd be 50 times that he's escaped. Tie him up and he shakes the lead or collar, the other day almost hung himself across the 5ft fence until the bungee rope somehow snapped and saved his life. He's been torn open and has a 10 inch scar from jumping through a wire fence and I just cannot stop the prick! lost for ideas other than to get rid of him.

That's been an option but then it'd have to be literally 24/7. I mean it when you can not let him off the chain for 10 minutes without watching him. I think those things are cruel anyway, I don't use him as I never chase foxes and hares anymore so he's just a pet now which is a fucking money sink as it is without the prick costing me in pound and wound fees
Ditch the dog and get a little toy dog if your missus wants a dog so bad.
Wait till the missus is out and shoot him then take him down the road a bit and run him over a few times. Misses sees him on way home thinks little Bugger got out again problem solved.

haha love to VC but somehow I think she'd smell a rat! If he costs too much to pick up today he'll be finding a new home. I'm mates with the ranger so really hoping that he's gunna let me off some of the fines...he'll be less of a friend if not haha

I was brought up in a greyhound racing family and if they couldn't do the job they were bred to do there was only one place for them, as harsh as it sounds. I feel a bit that way but am more compassionate. Problem is he's useless now, doesnt hunt for me just eats, shits and escapes. It'd be different if he was friendly but he doesn't even like to be patted. He hangs around sometimes but prefers to do his own thing.Quote:

Yeh if I was going to get rid of him I'd rather rehome him but then I'd feel bad that I'm putting the burden on someone else. I'll see, if he charges me just the amount for re-registering him I'll have to take him back. Kinda hoping he charges the full amount so I have an excuse to get rid of him.Quote:

Good luck Bavarian _hunter but re homing does not sound like a fair option for either the dog or new owner.
The bloody thing would have head butted a rapidly accelerating piece of lead before now just for being a fucking whippet if it was mine.

As you and others have put it, BH, you pass the dog on, his demise will eventuate some where down the track...who on earth would want such a dog...an motel kennel could be the only option. Neutering, to quieten a dog down etc is all fallacy...

The coward came out in me and I payed for him and took him home from the pound yesterday. Needless to say he spent yesterday arvo and today on the chain. Had him inside until the old man came, let him out for about five mins went outside to get him and the cunt had gone again. Luckily caught him down the street....fuckin prick

I find it fascinating that the forum is suggesting euthanising a dog for his owners simple lack of management.
Respectfully BH, it's not the dogs problem, its yours. Manage your dog.
Not only will a secure kennel and run stop him roaming, it protects him from harm, being run over on the road, dog fights etc. There are also a few great psychological reasons that make kennels with runs an advantage, it may even restore the poor bond you described with the dog.
Kennel and a Run nothing better in the world for unsupervised dogs... During the day dogs will sleep and chill 80% of the time anyways...I take my dog out in the morning and evening, and I am the one allowing that, and he is the happiest dog every when he hears the car drive in at 5.30 evening.
I go to work with peace and no worries that I'll get a pound fee or worse a car driving over him in middle of Auckland.
The biggest mistake I made when I got the pup was that I didn't have a kennel and a run right from the start.
Kennel and a run is not a prison for the dog, its home. you won't have RSPCA knocking on your door thats for sure. No need for shock collars or any electric expensive stuff. Just a simple closed space for the dog and exercise. Nothing complicated in this.
With $1500 you can build a 5star hotel for him
Personally I'm not a fan of the run style kennel much preferring kennel and chain.
My dogs have insulated kennels to keep them warm in winter and cool in summer. Their runs are about 1.2m wide and 2m long (excluding the kennels).
I have shade cloth over the top in summer and in winter I put tarps on to keep the rain off (otherwise they get their feet wet and the blankets in their beds get wet) plus the plastic dog beds - and in the winter I have felt door flaps I put up to keep the warmth in the kennels - totally spoilt.
They go in there for about 10 hours a day with meaty bones to keep them busy and are quite happy. If I'm at home they usually loaf around sleeping on their beds inside anyway so putting them in a run isn't cruel. Most dogs don't worry about going running around unless there is a reason for it.
Being confined in a run keeps them safe and mine get a decent run every night plus longer runs at the weekend.
I never have to worry that they are going to get out the gate and get picked up by the dog rangers.
