Thread: The dogs nuts

Trying to decide if I should have the dogs nuts off or not - pros and cons from anyone would be appreciated.

Brian is a male GSP / heading dog cross, 15 months old, 25kg. Trained for detecting feral cats and has one deer to his credit so far.

There are no immediate reasons such as behavior etc - I just want to do the best for the dogs health long term.

well Ive had two male dogs in last 20 years for hunting,both times they had the nuts removed,and both times I have lived to regret it.... if and when you dog turns into cracker indicating dog...and then starts getting old...it is a nice thing to be able to breed from him and start again with a pup...sure there is no guarantee you going to get his best traits..but a heck of a lot more chance than if pup has none of his genes.
same with my three bitches...we never bred them and it has been sad not to be able to carry on line.Meg got op as vet suggested it would help with her temperament....well that was B.S. as it made no difference at all. another mate speyed his bitch and she lost all drive to hunt....
if dog starts to stray looking for a root...well maybe....but I regret doing it to the cocker,even with his bung eyes,that dog had more hunt in him than most other three dogs combined.

All my dogs up till the last have been de-sexed however our latest addition is a wee bit special in-terms of both her breeding and how she is developing.

At this point she will remain "whole" as I would perhaps like to continue her line. Problem I have is finding good homes for puppies can be difficult from personal experience. In any case there are also others from her litter around NZ so either way we should be OK

If there is no reason to rush then perhaps waiting would not hurt......................pretty hard to reverse that decision eh

What are you trying to achieve?...not your problem if he roots some bitch, if he roams then tie the bastard up...from what I have seen most nutted dogs end up fat and useless.
