    Fern. The new hunting dog.

Some of you may recall the litter myself and a couple of mates bred a few months back. Parents were GWP/Lab & GSP/Lab.

Well they all found homes quite easily and most of those are hunting homes too, which is neat. And quite a few of them went to mates, so we’ll get to see their progress as well.

This is our one, Fern. She’s 11 weeks old now and she’s a spitting image of her father.

She’s settled in well, still yapping a bit when she wants out of her kennel/run, but she is getting better each day. Just focusing on getting her out for a session and toilet break before she gets unsettled.

I am long line training her and going down the track of the deer dog blue print, but without going the whole hog. It’s a great tool to help get the basics right. I still want her to be a pet for the boys to grow up with. So supervised fun time is pretty important too.

At the moment I haven’t got the time to be full on training her, so my wife gets her out for a couple of sessions each day to help out. That’s working well. Once the days get longer and work slows down I’ll be into it. Currently some of my training sessions are in the dark with head lamp on! Haha.

Without pressuring her too much, we have recall and sitting on command pretty sorted now, which I am pleased about. She’s a smart pup.

I’ll try and keep this thread up to date, as I know some of you will like to watch her progress into a useful all round hunting dog (hopefully!).

We’ll focus mainly on deer, tahr and chamois indicating, but retrieving ducks will be up there too. And if she goes well, the odd quail trip may be on the cards.

    Cheers
    Josh

Well...fair to say I'm not a fan of ugly dogs

Hard to say how big she'll be, shes pretty solid now. Her dad is a solid dog.

Some of them were a lot more light framed, throwing more the GSP way I think.

That is a really pretty we pup. Send her to Dundee for training, I have been amazed at the great job and progress he has made with a dog that was already six months old. I think he has set the bar, the pressure is on!! ( And not just on you )

Yeah she's cool. Sweet, I see he has nice labs there. I'll train her myself though...my GSP was/is a machine on deer and ducks, so I won't do too much differently to what I did with her. Get the basics sorted, then ease her onto the hill after a few months. Deer are the focus and I see several a week while working, and see them every time I hunt, so having plenty of opportunity to hunt target species really sets a deer dog up brilliantly. The retrieving is easy to suss once the deer part is sorted.

Good looking pup that you have there Josh.
Sounds like you are setting her up in an almost identical way as we are with my new hunting partner Tess.
I work away quite a lot so the Mrs will also be taking a roll in Tess’ training and we are also partially following the Blueprint too.
I just got back yesterday from 3 weeks on an oil rig so today was Tess’ first training session from me, only having met her for the first time yesterday.
We both have a lot to learn!

She’s from one of Jasons Drahthaar litters.

Size: 129.6 KB is a very similar mix to yours, bit less lab and has has just calmed down enough (2yrs old but looked just like fern as a pup) to be allowed in the back door in the evening. awesome on the ducks but i don't get her on to deer enough, i know you will enjoy the journey
