As most people know here I'll be getting a britt later this year.
When I said I wanted a deer hunting dog thatll do some bird work as well she quoted the to be parents achievements in field and show and was tellin me about how the mother is a dual champion etc.
My question is how important is all that stuff in determining whether I'm getting something from a good line? (I'm positive I am just more a general question).

I think you'll need to decide what you want this dog for. Starting your own line in future and it might be a bonus to do both. WAnt it for hunting, then train it and go hunt. If your competitive then you might really enjoy it.
If you want to know if the combo of bitchXdog is any good then go hunt over the two of them if you can. It's as good an indicator as any.

I'm just interested in hunting, which the breeder is all for and does themselves, but they were giving me all the credentials of their to promote the fact that they'll be good hunting dogs and I just don't know how relevant that is. Not saying at all that I don't think it is I'm just genuinely clueless to it.
BH, are you getting an American Brittany? If the parents come from hunting homes then you can be much more confident. If you are fearful of putting out a dud litter, then you seriously need to look around more at the working lines.

The trials in Australia (Victoria) are great...the birds (even in novice trials) are shot over the dogs...in WA there is no shooting.
The effort that you put in to training the dog will have more of an effect than the genetics of the dog. You can have the best genetics in the world, but if you don't put the effort in to bring the potential out, then the genetics count for nothing.

It's Tobenlee Brittany in Vic they have American Brittanys and yes they hunt. Are you aus or NZ? I'm pretty happy with these guys as they seem really good and have been more than helpful with everything. They also seem very happy and said they prefer their dogs to go to hunting families which is good. The woman cares a lot about her reputation I figured out as she got pretty arked up when I told her about something someone said about one of her pups (wasnt even bad).Quote:

nah I havent, I've spoken to one bloke who has one of their pups and uses it on deer - loves it and said he cant fault her. And Ruff said he's seen two of their dogs in field trials and they were in his words "Exceptional" which I take as a compliment to their kennel

for a deer dog breed it would be pretty much near the bottom of the list, they are great bird dogs though.
they do get used abit on deer in oz but so do english pointers so i'm unsure what the hunt drive is like compared to the higher driven bird lines around.
trials are what you make of them, if bringing out the breeds true ability is what rocks ya boat go for it, it gives you something to do when the seasons closed, you get to mingle with more dog nutters and hunters.

Before you make assumptions about what breed will or wont work deer talk to someone in the deer stalkers association - either NZ or Oz.
Over here, there are brittany successfully working deer.
And yes, I would agree - the dogs seen at field trials that are out of control reflect the handler moreso than the breed.
If you want to use it for Deer and birds, realise it will probably do one better than the other. If you want it to mainly hunt deer, then focus the training in this direction. In NZ this would mean lots of heeling, working by your knee while moving quietly through the bush.
This training will probably limit the dogs range while working birds, but that is the compromise you must accept.
A good dog though will quickly work out the difference between working birds and deer and change its behaviour accordingly.
Whichever you decide as the main focus, get the dog working well before training for the other.
I figured something like that might be the case. Out of the two definately deer is the one though, I like duck and quail hunting but doesnt phase me if I dont do it - think I only shot one duck last year and that was just because I hadnt got a hardhead before.Quote:

I would say if deer is your main species you hunt then a brittany probably isn't the best choice. Even if you do screw it down enough for deer, neither man nor beast will be happy with the arrangement. You will be forever hacking him back in, he will forever wanting to range out like they are bred to do, and do well.
Do I place faith in trials results? Depends on the trials. NZ pigeon trial? No. Australian trials where they shoot birds over the dog and retrieve on the spot? Absolutely
cheers for the feedback there pointer, the breeds question was a big bine of conjecture for han and I. I dont wont a big hyper boistorous dog around kids or a whiner so that ruled out GSP and vizsla, I cant stand labs so they were never an option and han doesnt like GWP so this was a fair compromise. the plan will be to do a lot more birding than I currently do but I'm going to try to make deer hunting fun for the dog so it likes it as much as I can. If only there was a dog that liked hunting as much as me I'd be in heaven!
