Hi guys , i am keeping an eye out for a suitable pup as a family pet and that i could train for deer stalking. I was thinking a gsp x lab?. I have seen some huntaway x smithfield x collie but they would probably need to be worked hard? Dont want something that cant handle being at home while im at work. Thanks
My experience with GSP and these dog types was many years ago, I found that they didn't like been left at home alone and let the world know. Have used heading, eye dogs for many years and have had great success with them. Have a border collie- eye dog now and she is great, indicates but will also catch a pig. The time you can spare getting them going is of the most importance, control is no1.
So you cant see too many problems with the huntaway Smithfield collie cross?
Have not used that combination, have used Smithfield cross as pig dogs. Find that lightweight dogs are ideal as they are quieter in the bush and don't puff and pant as much when it's hot. You never know what you have until you try it. For every one that makes the grade,Quote:

It really doesn't matter what the cross is, people will sit over a drink or 30 and pontificate on the most inane shit.... All dogs hunt, some better than others. Those with tons of natural ability are often wasted, those with bugger all can be made to look outstanding with diligent training. Deer dogs can be anything from a Jack Russell to a Rottweiler depending on your preference... Deer dogs are also the easiest to train by a country mile, the most basic discipline out there for a hunting dog. Still usually f***d up by most... Keep it simple, take it hunting, do the basics, take it hunting more, repeat the basics, keep hunting. It'll be OK.
Teach it to heel or stay close then go hunting. Job done.Quote:

My Collie cross which is 9 years old and gets out 3 to 5 days a week still has "blonde" moments, another young pig dog I have is Rottie- Ridgeback, have taken her out on her own and shot deer over her also. dont get a kiddy eater. keep it simple with a lab or lab cross pointer. any dog will indicate deer but some dogs will be easy to train and less highly strung.
personally mate seriously look at a wirehair, I lost my in a accident earlier this year and I am on a waiting list for a new one, great with the family and great in the bush. really miss having my mate around but look forward to the next girl.Quote:

And I don't know if the opinions vary that much.
Everyone seems to say get a lab or heading dog as they're low maintenance and have a lower energy level and thus better suited to family living.
But I'm not listening cos my hearts set on a cool Vizsla or GWP...
I know for me it's more a conflict of what I want vs what I should get.

There are many hunters with excellent indicator dogs, one guy I know who would be "as good as it gets" when it comes to hunting uses Vizslar's, he hunts for a living on "pest" control.But he is the sort of dog man that has always been able to get the best out of dogs. If your dog is going to be a family pet first, then that has to be the no1 priority. Over my hunting years even the pig dogs have been able to be loose around the family and friends without problems, we have "lost" an odd cat though.Quote:

The only reason I think she'd be ok (not bred for deer) is her parents are extremely clever. Both are hard on pigs but beautiful natures and easy to train.
Have had these dog lines for 25 years now.
As far as breeds are concerned I think the largest influence is always going to be the owner however buying something that is quiet and clever is half the job IMO.

Dogs not bred with the specific purpose you have in mind as the main goal. Any dog will hunt, some will hunt better than others, some will train easier than others. Some will achieve with less work, some will achieve with more and if bred appropriately will achieve more than an y other breed provided you do the work. Lesser breeds are dogs not bred specifically for the task at hand, but if you put in the work will make a fist of it.Quote:

Hi I have been using a foxy bitch for the past 2 1/2 yrs hunting deer successfully I have now bred her with another foxy both good hunters and great family pets. I have 2 pups left

I swear by my wirehair x vizsla x lab, he's only 24 months but already a great pet as well as deer dog. Comes to work everyday no probs, hangs inside with the mrs no probs but does get easily over excited with kids and gets abit retarded. IMO if you want a pet and deer dog is that you have to train the mrs just as much ! If my mrs starts spoiling Sika he goes backwards with basic obedience fast
