I know a guy who used his old puffer jacket and cut the sleeves off and sewn up the holes, packs small and worked good

Puffer Jacket and a fleece dog coat, sleeping on my fleece keeps Ziggy warmish down to -2. She is known to hop in the hammock at dawn when it gets the coldest.

I'd like to present this photo as evidence of the physique of a dog which does not need to fear the cold. Compared to the vizsla in the background

Bit of cut off thermal matt or a jacket for them to sleep on. "On your bed" is the command both at home and in the bush for me. Then if outside summer I probably have a polar fleece dog jacket or something that I chuck on them. For my younger dog Tine, he will also be tied up because he is an active bugger, so I want to keep him in place overnight. If there's a hut and it's just us, then they can come inside the hut. If its busy with other people, then they are outside. If I am fly camping or tenting, then there's generally a spot they can park up under the fly that keeps them out of the rain. Dogs don't come in my tent, those things are not cheap, and paws and claws are not what I want inside. My older girl has spent a few nights curled up in the vestibule because she is very cruisy to handle. The younger dog would be a pain in the ass so he doesn't get that right. A fundamental part of training for my dogs right from being a puppy is them being content with being tied up or placed in a kennel on their own and out of site. This translates between home life and bush life.

Yeah yeah. No one here has ever had a pup move from "their spot" under the cover of the early morning darkness conduct a stealth mission to sneak in for a snuggle.

Transiting from being a farmer to a townie has been confusing for me.

Carries her own thermals. I recently bought some dog biscuits with 27% less fat for he. After 2 weeks she' exactly the same weight but shits twice as much.

For last ten years we have fed pretty much nothing except chunky dog roll. 1/4 of roll per dog per day. No complaints and often commented on how good dogs look. Give feed of biscuits and yip, lots more landmines to scoop up lol.

To bring the topic back into focus, I thought that a cut off piece of closed cell mat would be appreciated on a recent trip, but was wrong. He squirmed and twisted but found his spot, ignored the mat and got the old jacket on top and was happy as Larry.Name: 8MutxkyuQjeO6126yGw4gQ.jpg

Yeah, like @stagstalker said you need to get them training/used to "their" pad. I'd have mine sit on the thermarest foam pad in the garage when mucking around. Made the association much easier in the field.
