Weimaraner's
Gday Team, I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has experience hunting with a Weimaraner, mainly as a pointer/deer dog.
We have some friends overseas who we have just been to visit and they are using a Weimaraner as a pointer with great success on Axis deer, I did notice one of their younger dogs had a very strong prey drive, he never sat still even around the house and was always watching anything that moved, they said that this was a trait with their dogs that had to be addressed before taking them into the field as they could become distracted very easy, would this be a common observation with them? Or maybe just the bloodline they have?
The mrs has been thinking of getting a puppy at some stage and She was pretty taken by our friends dogs so this could be a good chance for me to kill two birds with one stone, she gets a cute puppy, and i get a new hunting buddy.
Lovely dogs! Heres a couple of photos of them

There are some nice wei's in NZ but most have been captured by the show breeders. If you want a good hunting one you would probably need to import from Germany. I had one back in the late 80's he was a great bird dog, didn't use him on deer much.

a slow hiding to nothing is the general vibe, you will find exceptions but more the handler than the lines.
we had a German judge out last year and she breeds the working weims, big divide with breed even in germany as the latest fad is the BLUE weimaraner there.
she has offered to help anyone wanting VDH registered dogs but it would be a wasted effort unless the dogs stayed out of NZKC.

A mate has had several Weimaranas.
He hunted them exclusively on Deer with good success although one in particular was a bloody wanderer and would jump the fence at every opportunity and roam the town.
This cost him a few visits to the pound.
That said he was a good deer dog.
Cheers
Pete

Have done a bit of searching and found there is a kennel in canterbury that breeds them as gundogs. @stug, did you find your one quiet in the bush? Our friends here say theres is very good and doesnt pant, but they hunt reasonably flat, open eucalyptus plantations and scrub so hes never working hard, it is very hot though!

With some of the other versatile breeds that are available here you would have to be mad to buy one. Ones I have seen had little to no point, hard mouths and 'quirky' temperaments. That'll piss a few weim folk off but it's true.
*edit* the great ones you hear of seem to be from guys who owned them in the breeds heyday here in NZ. I'm not saying they didn't exist, just today you would probably be better off importing
