Hi all,
I am hoping that someone on this forum could point me in the direction of someone that breeds either a hunting line of straight whippets or does a first cross with something like a spaniel??
Whippets have turned out to be far more difficult to get a hold of than what I would have thought, I've even tried the registered breeders route but no way am I paying 2k for a pup with a desexing contract.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Ive got a litter of pure whippets due in the next few days. Great hunting lines. The dog is an aussie import.
I have a solid Black Dog with a white chest I'd be interested in him sireing a litter possibly if you find a good bitch

my neighbor when i was renting a house had a whippet, it was scared of pretty much all other dogs apart from mine who it would do the good old bum sniff and play routine with me. (mines a 35kg bag of muscle and teeth) for some reason the whippet had no issues despite just about shitting itself if a jack russell barked at it.
they are kinda nice dogs, seem a little over the top nervous to me though

So, what's the go with Wippet's ? Are they any good on deer or are they best suited to running stuff down, bunnies and pigs etc .
Sight hound, will instinctively chase anything that runs, wouldn't reccomend pure bred on pigs as they are very lightly built and would get beat up pretty bad, seen a few crossed with bull terrier type breeds make awesome pig dogs.
Definitely not a deer dog you want a scent hound for that.
Seriously there drive to chase is irresistible they will chase down anything that runs until they either catch it or run out of puff.

I've had a whippet/cocker cross before that threw more to the whippet and he was a great hunter, run down hares and fetch all day, but so cruisey otherwise. He was a big fan of sleeping.

I loved the whippets. Odd characters, great house dogs, but desperate to be worked. They can be annoyingly neurotic if not given a chance to be a proper whippet.

my cross not only uses her keen sight but she also uses her ears (in fact she picks up on sounds first).....always alerted to the minutest of sounds and she will go off stalking toward that sound once she sees her prey she will stalk in on it as close as she can always seems to put the animal between her and me so if it runs it runs to me i only have to call her name and she will stop the chase (she thinks shes big enough to take on a boar alone.....but really shes not she only tips the scales at 17kg so wouldnt want her to corner one and i wasnt there to dispense with it)Quote:

Mine do, but when I am allowed to sit with them I am reminded how smelly they have made their couch. Funny thing is they show no sign of wanting to clean it.

Wirehunt does a whippet Terrier x Nice wee dogs, like a Russel type short coat and markingsd with longer legs and snout. He breeds them for rabbiting and they are fast as f, turn on sixpence, a heap of energy and trainable if you put a bit into it. They never stop so need something to do... I have trained mine to hold and point on rabbits so they can do it if you put the time into them.
@Wirehunt do you or anybody you know have any of these first cross dogs or pups or know of any upcoming litters??

He's never been hunted yet, but I can tell you his drive to chase is very very strong, just don't have access to any rabbit properties currently with big enough open space to let him run without worrying about him bowling into fences etc, this can be a problem with whippets the drive to cach often blinds them to there surroundings.Quote:
