New Stiller custom action - Spectre

Hi Guy,

These are hot off the press, the new Spectre action. Basically set-up to compete with the Surgeon type actions. Has integral machined picatinny rail, but has a separate pinned lug (1 supplied with the action), so you can choose to use whatever type/thickness you want.

I am getting at least one of these for a customer in our order next week, as they have Short action .308 face available right now. Anyone else interested in a pre-order ??

The exchange rate is wobbling a bit at the moment, but i can only guesstimate the landed price will be about $1900.00 incl gst for one of these actions.

I will need to know within the next few days if you want to get in on the next order. Will need a $1500.00 deposit down to secure your order, and to avoid any complications.

Sorry, but not much time to muck around on these, as if we don't get in soon they are going to go quick. Guys have been waiting for these for a long time, so they will sell out fast.

These are mainly designed to fit into the AICS type stocks, and have a 'octagon' shape on the underside of the action as well (unlike the surgeons which are rounded on the underside). They do NOT have integral feed rails - they must be fed from a mag system - usually either standard AI mags, or the double-stack 'AW' mags. No,I don't know what the weight is, but obviously they are intended for tactical rifles, where real men don't whinge about how heavy those extra few ounces are. ;)

For going to the shops, absolutely nothing, which makes it a fairly bad analogy since the Stiller outperforms the 700 at basically everything, not just one really specialised thing that no-one does

So what makes it better. I reckon the rail being part of it is probably good. What else? Stronger? Lighter? Smoother?

One would hope that when buying a custom action that everything is totally concentric square and in line with close tolerances.
Some thing you are unlikely to get with any mass produced budget action.

I will try to keep it breif, but here are a run-down of some of the main advantages of a Predator, Tac30, Tac300, or Spectre over as stock-standard Rem 700:

1. Better metalurgy, heat treatment and straightness. The Stillers are pre-hardened before final machining, so they don't need to be 'trued' later.
2. Sako/M16 style extractor as standard.
3. Smaller diameter firing pin tip as standard - to reduce blow-back/blanking of primers.
4. Less bolt to reciever clearance (typically 0.002"), so the bolt does not to be sleeved. The tests Stillers did confirmed that their hunting actions shot just as well as the target actions with the same barrels fitted to each.
5. MUCH better extraction cam on the stillers, and smoother camming/extraction, cycling of the bolt.
6. 1-piece bolt - not a 3-piece welded/fused assembly. Fluted bolt shaft as standard (if you are into that.)
7. Bolt release tab on the LH side, not inside the trigger guard bow.
8. Threaded bolt knob means that either short or tactical knob can be fitted to your preference.
9. Longer mag cut-outs on the Predator series.
10. Integral picatinny rail on the Spectre for increased stiffness (and WOW i just gotta have one factor..... !!)
11. The bolts on these also have the BR-style constantly guided FP tip (the dia 0.067" tip never leaves it's guidance tunnel/hole, whether cocked or de-cocked.)
12. Pinned recoil lug system makes life easy for the gunsmith or owner, if you are changing barrels - no hassles with recoil lug alignment.
13. Much better action rigidity, means you can hang reasonably heavy barrels off them with confidence that the mid-section of the action is not haemoraging....
14. Stainless actions (17-4 PH i think?) - hard black oxide finish on the Tac series and Spectre.

I hope that these points give you a better idea of the advantages. I'm sure i have probably missed something though...

To me the single thing that this action does that a Rem700 will not do , is run a AI AW magazine , you could mod a Rem700 to do this , BUT you wuold be cutting a lot of metal out of the bottom of the Rem action , and in the process weaken the action , remember the Rem700 has a open top as well as a open bottom .
How the custom actions address this problem , is they have a enclosed top strap for lack of a better word .
The AI AW mag is a double stack/feed mag , and not only needs a big hole in the bottom of an action , BUT different ramping to a std Rem700 action .

To me this action can be used in a normal stock , with bottom metal , like Stillers or BadgerM5 , and also can be dropped into a chassis type stock , like the AI AICS or AI AX AICS .

They look real nice in the AX stock , BUT the biggest reason to use a Spectre or similar action is all about the magazine .

Heres a photo of 2 different AI mags , bottom one is a 10rd AW mag , top is a AI AICS Rem700 mag , very different , the AW is a double stack/double feed , the AICS mag is a double stack , single feed design .

The AW 10rd mag is not much bigger than a 5rd AICS mag .

Here's a pic showing the 5rd AICS mag , & the 10rd AW mag , as you can see the AW is not much bigger in size for double the capacity as well as double feed , etc ,
