Great to see some of the other member volunteers
Bonecrusher - How do you finding the pressures from either or both teams parents/supporters when reffing a game?
Maca, not lame at all. 16 years is a great contribution and commitment. The motto "people helping people" sums it up in one

8 years volunteering for the South region of Camp Quality - an annual week-long camp for kids affected by cancer. They each get paired up with a trained "companion" who is their buddy for the week. Was a companion for 5 years, and have been on the regional organising committee for 3 years. Recently became 2IC web advisor to the board.
Also the secretary of the Dunedin branch committee of the Child Cancer Foundation, and on the Otago/Southland regional committee for that too.
Absolutely love what I do, and the passionate and amazing people that I get to meet. I don't really understand why more people don't volunteer.

Mate I use all sorts of tactic's to buy yourself "time and space",. I will stop a game if abuse is being clearly directed at me ... motion the offender out onto the pitch then everyone is looking at him being a chump then I give him two options either moderate his behaviour or watch from the carpark :). With players I tend to put alot of effort into my prematch talk make it very clear and obvious what I expect. Being an explayer I play a long advantage and if one doesn't accrue back to infringement, keep a count of my penalty's using a counter on my lanyard. Most importantly cynical play or repeat offenses I bin them ....
I enjoy the pressure and challenge it is great personal development prepare well at least 10 hrs preparation mid week - game plan etc I'm quite passionate about rugby so handle the good with the bad I've been acused of being a racist's - two maori clubs go figure,

Looking forward to this coming Sunday when I finally get the chance to get winch trained with the Westpac chopper here in Whitianga.
Mind you, with the amount of call outs the chopper is getting while based here, I am not holding my breath for it to be available. It is excellent knowing that they are going to be here throughout the silly season now that they have a purpose built base for the crew etc.
-
Thats awesome Pengy. Great experience. I have organized a couple of trips to the Westpac base for our guys. Mainly so that they don't get all googly eyed when it comes in on a job.
You realize that there is quite a bit of pressure to some pics from Sunday. Have fun

Hmm. Weather looks like it might pack up Sunday. :(
-
Well the weather packed up BIG time so we never got off the ground.
Ten of us went out to the new Westpac hanger that has been built for the guys here, along with a nice house for the crew. Had a good couple of hours going through winch procedures etc so the day was not wasted.
What a good bunch of bastards the crew are
-
@Pengy that's a bummer. Today is a cracker of a day. there will always be another day to go for a fly
@Josh how was Xmas for the cancer kids? lots of sweet moments?
-
Haven't caught up with them since our Xmas family camp in November. I'm off on our main week-long camp on the 4th January though - they always love that! Hope this bloody rain stops before then.

No job too small
A couple of weekends ago we got called to a kite in powerlines.
On way to the station, going past the waterfront, there were some kite surfers on the water and a fair bit of wind blowing. We got there to find the kite was a kids kite which had since released itself and blown and blown across the road into a paddock. Sent a couple of the boys to retrieve it. An embarrassed mum was kind enough to laugh at our jokes and her son had a play in the truck.
As we were about to leave one of the kite surfers was have trouble opening a combination lockbox under his car that had his keys in it. A bit of water got the numbers turning and a tap with the hammer finished the job.
2 happy customers and a thumbs up for the Fire Service
