Was chatting to my mate last night and he remembers there was some paperwork that came with the head when he brought it, didnt mean anything to him at the time and he is going to dig them out and hopefully that will answer the questions we all have

Over the years plenty of heads with that classic shape have come out of the Ruahines north of Purity. Makai, Otukota, Marapea.

Old Cooch who used to be a member here has several, 280 sort of DS score.

Id be interested to hear why you think that…I hunted parts of the Ruahines 50 years ago with the ol man..I remember seeing several trophy heads come out of those areas similar to the ones pictured ,..never bagged one myself…..but the stock 50 + years ago are not the same stock we have now …

My comment was based on the fine structure of the antlers and the symmetrical size. The Ruahine liberations were from Royal Windsor Park, a much heavier beam and mass, Eastern Ruahine was also Windsor x Warnham and they often had palmation on the tops. It does have a Windsor look to it, as they were a very even form of head.
But hey, its only a comment based on a photo. Seeing in the bone (cant say flesh) it could look different. Any documentation or knowledge of its origins would be worth finding and keeping or else its lost in time like so many classic old heads passed on.

Robin Cox got a magnificent 16pter in 1976 in the NWR. A young bloke got a whopper some years later over in the same area [posibly around Mokai Station] but clearly had traits of farm bred.
