    Building a war chest

I shall walk before I run. Lets talk about building a war chest, a pool of funds that we can use to go on the offensive and create as much push back as possible. Social media campaigns, lawyers, fliers, newsletters. Whatever.

The objective at this point, as I see it, is to make it as much of a disaster as possible and bind them up in as many issues as possible, that the ultra dramatic knee jerk ban backfires hard.

One approach would be to hire a lawyer so we can dig our toes in about the amount of compensation for our rifles.

Thanks for pointing this out, until now I was unaware of this organisation.
For the naive like , COLFO is the Council of Licensed Firearms Owners.
    Their website is found here

    https://www.colfo.org.nz/

I am at a loss as to what to do. Its mind boggling what is currently occurring in our country.

We need a single entity to represent all of us . At present some of the other groups - think Deerstalkers as one - have thrown everyone except themselves under the bus. Deerstalkers is not the organisation to represent everybody now , but they should be part of the single entity.

Colfo should be that entity , although I have been vocal in the past about the way they operate . ALL the other shooting groups , clubs , disciplines need to get on board but they wont . "We dont use semi autos so it doesnt apply to us " , "we only use single shots so we are ok " etc.

This is the beginning of the end for firearms ownership for many people. After the MSSA's have gone they will be back for your semi auto shotgun, then your pump , then before long we will all only use single shots. May not happen quickly but it will happen in the next 50 years . Thankfully I dont have enough years left in me to see the end of it all .....

    Thats todays rant from me

Quite right, glad I won't be either. The abandonment of the democratic process here and the indecent haste of it all is disturbing to me,regardless of any other issues involved.

My wife and I are signing up to COLFO. If you want to give the war chest to them, so be it. Their membership is cheap.

You underestimate me. I get that COLFO is where it is at and the perfect place for us all to unite. It is also the perfect target for the standard "Gun lobby" slur and this is one of the reasons we are losing. It is not actually a viable approach alone, because the media have conditioned the public to violently object to what they see as "NRA tactics" and the standard fear which I have seen time and again from the public that "we are almost America".

Americas terrible reputation comes from the states with the tightest gun control. Chicago being the poster child for failure.

I had alternate plans to support COLFO and others, while sidling around the media. I have been receiving PMs along the lines of "can't we get better media" after I mentioned my intent to enter politics as a way to fight this.

May I suggest, in as polite a way as possible, that all the upper echelon of the shooting community might be a bit old for a modern political battle? The great Orange one sits in the oval office because he is a social media master, while the establishment botch it to a humiliating degree.

I have changed my mind. Forget lawyers. They are too expensive, though I maintain that by more than one legal challenge you force your opposition to spread their resources. The more legal challenges, the more diverse the opposition appears. My intent with lawyers was simply to use them to haggle over our byback compensation and make sure we get top dollar, putting more stress on the whole initiative.

Instead of Lawyers, what about a funded and professional social media campaigns that have little or nothing to do with conventional positions, but rather undermine the anti-gun lobbies tactics.

We need spokesman on social media who challenge our stereotypes.

I totally agree - I am too old to get into this stuff more than I do already. Dont have the skills or temperament for it , nor the desire .

Perhaps we need to engage a specialist social media company to advise and overview our approach?

This makes absolutely no sense. I don't mean to be rude, but that is not how democracy works, even out watered down version. Also, I am not talking about messages.

I am talking about applying pressure to the legislation which COLFO can not do, because as you say, they are a single voice which is essential. The don't have the capacity to overwhelm legislation by bogging it down in a vast array of challenges from multiple angles.

I am talking about image. COLFO allows the media to paint firearms owners as NRA types and as people have accepted that as the nexus of evil, that tactic is fraught with difficulty. Everyone needs to be a COLFO member, but you are still going to lose in the court of public opinion.

The NRA is winning because they have an army of supporters who have followings in the millions. While the media paints them as white male racists, they are actually championed by women and minorities through social media.

Because of this, the medias strategy backfires. People see both and they realize the media is lying.

This is inexpensive these days. We can work to increase the number of license applicants and with a focus on things like getting women into firearm sports which in my experience they absolutely love.

We need to pump up our sport. COLFO can champion our cause, but they can't attract people to it like the actual participants came.

This would involve something along the lines of finding people who are good ambassadors and sponsoring them to develop a social media following. I am thinking of the hyper-keen and extremely helpful young girl in my local hunting store or the trans lady who so bravely defended us on the news, when that will likely make her a total outcast in her own liberal community.

Break the mold, grow the sport.
