This is the grey area, ask the police or our wonderful leader and they wont be able to tell you either. Million dollar question that one.

We'll have to wait awhile to find out I think.

It wouldn't surprise me to find that this matter is still chaotic and unresolved at Xmas time.

This is technically correct but by making all these semis MSSA and saying no permits to procure will be issued, any newly classified E cat semi in your possession is now illegal as they are not registered as E cat's on your licence.

Possibly for your A cat guns. Security/storage requirements was one of the upcoming changes mentioned.

Some sense in improved security, but the guy bought his rifles, he did not steal them..........so increased security would not have made a difference.

I am a little unsure why they changed fro 7 to 5 rounds for the capacities. It is almost like one of them owns a heap of 5 shot mags that no one would buy cos they wanted 7s......

All the LFAOs out there that were happily complying with A cat laws by purchasing 7 round mags have now found out that even buying a 5 round mag to comply wont work, as the rifle is CAPABLE of accepting a 30. Seeing as all rifles that are CAPABLE of accepting a 30 are going to be categorised as E cat, then does the 5 round point not become moot. Especially when the fixed internal mags are still 7?

    OR am I misunderstanding something?

One of my points was the new laws have to be clear, easy to understand and not open to (mis)interpretation. That is in part what got us into this mess.

The offender wanted to stir up controversy. But if the 1992 laws had been clear, simple and not open to misinterpretation from both sides there would have been no controversy to stir up.

(When I refer to "misinterpretation from both sides" I am not saying one side was wrong or even which side, but referring to the fact that both sides had different interpretations of the same words.)

Of course. They can use detachable magazines bigger than five rounds.

Good post, cause it’s clear as mud, but yes if they announced that it was going to be a phase process and what each phased covered we would be saying, oh ok.

I read this article this morning, which then further confused me.

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/chr...ew-weapons-ban

    Under the

    WHAT'S NOT BEING BANNED?

The ban does not include semi-automatic .22 calibre or smaller guns that hold up to 10 rounds or semi-automatic and pump-action shotguns with non-detachable magazines that hold up to five rounds. The guns not banned are commonly used by farmers and hunters.

So did I just read, any pump action shotgun with a non detached magazine i.e. tube that holds more than five rounds is banned ?
    And is that 4 + 1 or 5 excluding chamber ?

*update, police website has more info and....I just answered my question

Firearms that are not affected by the Order in Council include:

    rimfire 0.22 semi-automatic rifles,
semi-automatic shotguns with a tubular magazine that holds five or less rounds, and
pump action shot guns with a tubular magazine that holds five or less rounds.

So, a pump is not a semi, can’t take a mag, but because it holds more than 5 your stuffed.
