Democracy ended long before this in New Zealand but it took a act of insanity for people to relise that this country is no longer democratic

I genuinely fear what the "constantly offended, snowflake generation" is going to do to my 4 year old sons era.

Gone is rational discussion, and factual argument.

"Long reign screaming nonsensical garbage at anybody that does not agree"

We have regularly had longer periods of investigation and fact finding about single fatality motor vehicle accidents than we have had about something that affects directly 250,000 plus law abiding people. Or why this happened in the first place.

I don't agree with a lot of what's happening on the political front (re: firearms), nor do I have much faith in some of the current societal shifts/trends -- furthermore, the government's lack of/poor consultation with the firearms community makes a mockery of the term 'democracy'.

But as far as democracy is concerned, I think most New Zealanders want Semi's banned in the wake of this recent tragedy. So even if the government adhered to a more 'just' method of public consultation, the outcome would have likely been the same, and 'democracy' would very likely NOT have worked in our favour.

Guess it's what we get for being a minority group.

Most NZers have been talked into how dangerous and awful these military style firearms are, note the dick with a bushmaster? showing all how evil they are and all the media looking on so the word, and photos can be spread! It amazing me just gullible some people are. that they need other things to blame as they cannot face the truth, to much emotion and not enough logic?

    Yes @Maca49.
With powers of the Order in Council, which deals with threats to national security they could have made an order suspending all use of MSSA's pending full consultation and review by "normal" enquiry protocols allowing a month or so for proposed legiskation to be carefully considered then notified to the public for input.
Instead we saw Cahill demands within a few hours of the attack, followed almost immedately by demands from H. Clarke and P. Alpers via the New York Times, immediately repeated by PM Ardern. A media frenzy followed that set out to demonise every fal owner. Following this we were subjected to ever shortened time frame and vague proposals upon which public was expected to meaningfully comment and submit to.
Next phase has been a non expert select committee listening to only a few government selected speakers.
I am pleased that the NZ Law representatives supported those of us who have protested the time frame, protocols and procedures. Many now justiably feel disenfranchised and victimised. This did not reflect our New Zealand way.
    Underarm bowling comes to mind.

If they were that sure of themselves they would not have rammed the legislation through-and-up on a large-caliber broomstick without benefit of KY jelly. If they had put it to the popular vote at the next election and we were outvoted, that would have been democracy.
