Chaz Forsyth
Chaz Forsyth has passed on, for those that knew him.
The guy was basically an institution in the NZ shooting world. I was dealing with him right up to Christmas and he seemed to be battling his illness with strength and humour and I had no idea his time was so short. We have been diminished.

A sad loss to the shooting community, RIP Chaz.

A very knowledgeable and humble man. Rest in Peace.

We met when sitting university entrance exams and went on to friendship. Always fun to be around. A great guy.
-
A life well lived. Got a well deserved gong last King's Birthday.

Met Chaz a few times many many years ago through MSC. A heck of a nice guy and always battling for the cause of hunters and firearms folks. Sleep well old friend, enjoy the happy hunting grounds, the steady breeze in your face and the bountiful game.

He was very knowledgeable and helpful to me as a young guy starting in the early 2000's, when he was the RO at the North Dunedin rifle range. I turned up fairly fresh to the centrefire scene, and he helped me set things up with ease, nothing was a bother to him, he was just interested in helping, and having a good chat about all things firearms (and if I recall correctly finding used brass reloading!) and RIP Chaz.

RIP Chaz. Had many a yarn at NZDA conferences etc. Very knowledgeable and passionate man. Thanks for your time on the planet Chaz.

Well, that’s sucks. Always thought Chas would live forever. I’d caught up with him not so long ago after many years and it had seemed to me that he’d hardly changed. Will always remember him as an old school scholar and gentleman, who was always willing to give you time and advice or just chat in general. Will be sadly missed but fondly remembered. Safe journey my friend.

A good mate for the past 50 years, now at rest. I visited him a week ago in the hospice and he was alert and had been chatting to so many visitors that he was losing his voice. A great loss, not only to the firearms community but also to the University of Otago. The sheer number of visitors from both areas was testimony to the respect in which he was held. He told me during my visit that he regretted being unable to attend the annual PSI reunion shoot in March at Sparrowhawk, but he will be appropriately remembered at the event!

Only had the privilege a couple of times to chat to him and shoot by his side. Hell of a good guy and a great loss to the community, both in personality and knowledge.
-
He was a friendly and easy guy to chat and get along with. RIP mate.

Chaz is one of the most knowledgeable people I have ever met in the fire-arm community, and very generous in sharing information. I had the privilege of working alongside him as range office at LVR, and hunting with him in the Blue Mountains. A true character and one who will be sorely missed. RIP Chaz

I heard this news last week. It is very sad and he is big loss to our sport. He was aways a gentleman in the true sense, very knowledgeable and generous with time. I always enjoyed chatting with him at the range and various events around the city.

Chaz was my examiner for my first firearms license test about 47 years ago. That's how long he's been contributing tirelessly to our community.
Lovely guy, good friend to all and willing mentor to many beginners. A huge loss but a life well lived.
RIP

We farewelled Chaz at his memorial service in Dunedin today (what would have been his 77th birthday). It was a large turnout (over 400) with representatives of all the clubs and organisations he was involved with (NZDA, Colfo, PSI, Mountain Safety, etc, etc.). A lot of laughs and reminiscences, with lots of hunting photos and all his outdoor gear laid out on tables. There were several speakers, and Nicole McKee was also there in a private capacity. It lasted for 1-1/2 hours followed by the usual bun fight and catching up with friends we hadn't seen for a long time. I don't think Chaz appreciated the respect in which he was held although the endless stream of visitors at the hospice must have given him a clue. We have lost a true friend to the shooting sports, and I doubt that his equal will ever be seen again.

I was lucky enough to meet Chaz through the NZDA. He was a great guy, always keen to impart some reloading knowledge, and a true bastion of evidence-based firearms laws. Rip Chaz, thank you for your service

Yes - the Firearms Community lost a champion with the passing of Chas.

He helped me massively when I lived in Dunedin. Always interested in talking calibers, practical aspects of shooting. I feel we are running out of hero’s and he was one of the them.

I know that one time he failed to solve an accuracy problem for a Leith Rifle Range user and was so disappointed that he bought the owner of the rifle a new box of cartridges. He helped me out on a number of occasions too.
