    Sir Tim

Sad to just hear of Tim Shadbolt passing at 78

Cricky he was a character & love him - or not, he did great things for Southland & was probably the most fun - entertaining Mayor NZ has ever seen.

We need more Kiwis like him in local body politics instead of all these dry ball pricks that seem to milk a wage outta the rate payers nowadays.

    RIP

I worked with Tim on several "projects" over the years he was mayor, it was always like herding cats, but tremendous fun. RIP

I saw him address a crowd of Otago uni students in about 1970 and I thought he was a remarkably charismatic speaker.

I remember him from my school days, our teacher invited him to speak to my 5th form history class without notifying the headmaster. He was an activist student at the time at Auckland uni. He turns up with a load of "hippy long hairs" and an Alsatian on a heavy chain which I especially remember.
He handed out copies of Maos little red book. We were mesmerized, then the shit hit the fan, the principal and a cop turned up Tim just said looks like our rides here live as you want to and went. Evidently Mr Bowen, the history teacher had a robust discussion with the principal afterwards.

Yeah, they got a shit sandwich all right. Big sacrifices. A bloke I played footy with went over for the sort of ultimate thrill. In no time he was home having lost his legs. Terrible.
Regardless, in many respects Shadbolt was proven correct. It was a futile pointless conflict.
