I got my 2 boys a #8 (?) Opinel each for their first Scout camp. Still have one of them as a keepsake for the youngest who would of turned 39 tomorrow.

Opinel, Available with kids sized handles, good lockout on the blade that the kids can operate. A lot of other locks are too fiddly for little fingers. Drill a hole and fit a bright paracord lanyard....

I would recommend an Opinel, can get different sizes. Simple with a locking blade and good steel. Nothing too fancy for a first knife.

No way a beginner should be starting with a 338 Lapua unless you want to become recoil sensitive or develop a flinch.

Possibly trying to crimp them to short. And creating to much internal pressure. Try adjusting the crimping station out a bit. Or find some shorter wads. Some pictures of the problem would help.
