Proberly didn't know what you were, until he got wind of you and that's when he took off. Not so sure about the squealing though??? They will make a scoffing noise at you before running however.

Something like a 243win would be perfect for fallow and handle reds at sensible ranges too. One of the best in between cals for those animals I reckon. But realistically what ever you hit it with...

My last 3 reds shot with Superformance 150grn out of a 22inch barrel. 2 at about 200m and 1 at around 100m. All didn't go further than 5m from impact. All hilar shots. If that's any help.
