If your stock already has checkering why not mask the area and get into it with some stripper and a tooth brush, comes up mint and no risk of an over run / slip with a checkering tool.

You could buy your own, as you could wear out a cutter on a stock refurb, esp on a recut. Steves Wholesale is the Bembart agent and sells individual parts. I bought a handle and a couple of cutters...
