You are onto it. Mate with a thermal sees dozens all over the place. Open up on them though, and you'll be lucky to get two-three of them. They are not silly.

I wouldnt do it. Guts out and hanging as quickly as possible . If it was the next day id only take back straps depending on bullet damage etc.
