I use 62 grains of 2209 and get 2980fps from a 22 inch barrel, for one inch groups with a 150 grain interlock. Been using it for years.

165 to 180gn projectiles is where the 30/06 does its best work. for the short barrel forget the 30/06 and go for the 308 IMO. 30/06 would be better served with a 22" barrel.

The 06 can give you 100 to 150 fps more in any bullet weight than a 308. If you're serious about 400 yds, I think there's really no advantage to be had with the 06. In either case 165 gr would...

I use to do 56.5gr 2209 with 165gr bowler bt, accurate but not that fast ( was before easy access to chronographs )Also 60gr 2209 with 130gr Speer.
