For a first knife go with the Bahco. Good blade shape ( not as good as Nga makes ) and not too long which is very important while you learn how to use it and a fluoro handle so you don't loose it in...

Plus one for the bahco the colour makes them difficult to loose. For a folder mercators are hard to beat. A bit thin in the handle but will do everything.

Hard to go past any of the knives used at the works. 30-40 bucks and easy to sharpen. Victronox, victory etc. Green river still bloody good as well. Or go real cheap and get a Bahco, cut like a razor...
