Cheap 308 ammo is not far off cheap 223 ammo for price and for hunting makes little difference to overall trip cost.

Yup. The cost of defending your stance would well outweigh the cost of setting yourself up for an E-cat. The uses for a hi cap mag in anything other than a semi would be few.
