   AFAIK the current rule is a bit like allowing a drunk driver to continue driving as long as they have a licenced driver sitting beside them, so if its relating to that its probably reasonable enough.

   And knowing a few police officers personally, from the conversations I've had with them on topics like this they seem to agree with most of us and be just as frustrated with the bureaucrats.

    Most of them use barometric pressure to determine altitude, so you have to recalibrate them at known points for accuracy as the pressure changes. I have an old Timex watch with alti+barometer etc,...
