AFAIK sleeved poles are stronger than clipped as they spread the force more evenly, and even if a pole does break then as long as it doesn't rip through the sleeve the tent can mostly stay up. Clips...

If they said he was a hunter then chances are he was up to some form of hunting. Could have been pest control, could have been poaching, doubt anybody speculating here has any idea so whats the point?
