    I suspect the extra recoil of a 270 or 30-06 would still be likely to intimidate a newby shooter. I'd go something in the 6.5x55/260/7mm08/308 range. Suppressed and not too light in weight.

    It still seems a bit odd that the police like to proudly quote statistics to say how well they've been doing at reducing violent crime, and then turn around and say they need be armed all the time...

    My cop and ex-cop mates would agree with you on that, I've heard some pretty hair-raising stories from them about policing in the 'bad old days' of the 80s and 90s.
