3 is likely. It only heard you, but had not seen or smelt you. And didn’t hear enough to confirm for certain there was danger there to make an exit.

Plenty of options. Can pretty much do any interior hut to Makahu or Lakes carpark. Boyd, Tussock, Otore Biv then out could be worth a crack. Te Puke to Makahu could be good.
