These dimensions and proportions are most certainly not my own work, just conventions that have been well established over time. They’re not that widely known though I guess.

Truoil will be all good, I HIGHLY recommend thinning with lacquer thinner for the sealing coats. Help it get in deep. And de-whisker very well, or first time you take it out in the rain it will...

Given that you’ve been annealing the brass and getting this problem, perhaps try NOT annealing and try that on a few cases. Remove one variable at a time and you will find the problem.

Done a number in the last few years. Best I’ve found is to get some spar varnish and thin it down with vegetable turps. Talking 50/50. Paint it on until it won’t absorb any more- end grain will take...
