If it is in hard antler and as big as it is likely to get, I would tip it up whenever I seen it. Especially in the South Island as stags can move a long way over the next few weeks. No guarantees...

No real downsides for the ranges that you talk about.. Personally for me a 270 needs 24 inches of barrel to work well, its a bit blasty, kicks a bit in a light rifle, factory loads out of a 22...
