About Mr Browning
Biography:
Bought up in Central Otago shooting bunnies since 12 with my Dads single shot bolt-action Winchester. Bought a BL22 when I got into pest control. Now I live in Christchurch as a small business owner and still manage to get out onto a permission inland from Christchurch and enjoy plugging away at hares and rabbits when I can to help with fitness and keep the eye in. Recently increased my armory with a Ruger American .17hmr and came onto this site seeking assistance in sighting the scope in. Met a great bloke who helped me out and now am really enjoying the discussion and people of this board. Thank you, if I can help anyone out I will try.
Location:
Christchurch
Interests:
Shooting, fishing and more
Occupation:
Owner of small IT company.

Anything from 243 upwards with good constructed bullets. When I was culling second day on the job I run into a big boar about 25 yds below me, I hit him with a 50 gr Sako factory round in the ear...

I have seen a pig taken from Pureora Forest with what appeared to be a 30-30 projectile buried deep in the shield along with 6 .22 projectiles...all historic wounds...he was a gnarly old bastard but...

Reading through, the question needs asked - 'Are you a confident (as in quick on target), deadly accurate field shot ? If you can say "I am a stone cold killer, the grim reaper of rabbit killers"...

Seems to me that 243 would cover it, usual caveats of good bullet placement applying.

Any centrefire from 222 up is fine. If you not going to carry out the pigs either take someone with you that will lol Or take the legs of, makes a good roast, easy to carry out. Can bone them out...

The 308 wont have any problem with monster boars, the shield be no problem if using a 308, it go down. A 223 depending on distance, projectile could be a problem if hit a good boar is the shield....

Contrary to some of the big bore assumptions, pigs are actually very easy to kill. They have a very vulnerable neck / base of skull area that is easy enough to target as Moa Hunter says, just use the...

Mr Browning a couple of questions: Do you already have a centrefire? If so, if it is in the the range of my suggestions, use that. I have done a bit of boar stalking as I have never had a dog. My...

It depends where you hit them, I shot a 162lb boar on Saturday with my .223. It was a head shot. Shot placement is always the most important thing especially the big ones

I went with a 7mm08 as my do everything centrefire. I have shot pigs, deer, tahr, chamois, wallaby and goats with it out to 300m no problems.

Avoid 223 , tits on a bull when it comes to shooting pigs reliably , seen a good few fuckups with 223 vs boars , I carted a sawn off bolt action 12g around for years or a 3030 but they were for...

We have had the same problem on our farm for about 15 years now, I have always used a 223. Short action for quick cycling, reasonably quiet when suppressed and unless you are taking shots over 200...

Wot you got in centerfire calibers already? I'm sure we'll find summat suitable, unless they're all .22's.

Bigger is better when it comes to pigs, unless head and neck shooting.
