   That filter would be the banjo gauze where the fuel supply line to the pump is bolted on to the fuel pump. Any signs of bug in the system and this could be blocked up - fairly easy to check and also...

    Yep to that, kinda sums it up. Most vehicles achieve best fuel economy in the region of 65-80km/h - going over that increases the drag effect exponentially and hits you in the arse pocket.
